The Blue Comets, who lost their first two matches of the season, won later in the week by sweeping host Wheatmore. Noah Stills threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Robertson for the game’s first points. Nathan Ellis threw to Colton Law for a second-quarter touchdown. The other touchdown came on Stills’ 12-yard scramble on a fourth-and-10 play. The Cougars (2-0) defeated one of the state’s top Class 1-A teams from a year ago. Caraway Speedway to add five to Wall of Fame

SOPHIA – There will be five additions to Caraway Speedway’s Wall of Fame this weekend. The new members are Donald Tucker, John Paul Linville, Junior Miller, long-time official Lance Childress and Riggs Racing. The group will be honored as part of Saturday night’s race card. Tucker was one of the winningest drivers at the speedway during the early dirt-track years. Then during the early years of racing on a paved track, Linville proved to be one of the most consistent drivers. The outcome wasn’t secure until Kai Matthews’ interception. Matthews earlier scored a touchdown on a rushing play. Laughlin threw for 225 yards on 16-for-24 passing. Former Klaussner Furniture workers react to shutdown

ASHEBORO – A lawsuit has been filed against Klaussner Furniture after the Asheboro-based company abruptly ceased operations last week. Former employees of the manufacturing company allege that Klaussner Furniture didn’t provide proper notice of the shutdown. Information in notification from Klaussner Furniture that was listed as part of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act shows that 884 jobs were to be lost. The WARN Act requires employers to provide 60 days’ notice. The shortened time frame on the notice came from what appeared to be unforeseen business issues. Rose races to victory at Caraway Speedway

SOPHIA – Cory Rose won the 35-lap Challengers feature Saturday night at Caraway Speedway. Rose held the pole position after qualifying and then briefly lost the lead to Enoch McNeil following a restart. But once Rose got back in the groove, he cruised to the victory. McNeil finished second, followed by Daniel Schadt, Matthew Smith and Blake Shupe. In UCARs, the winner was Sammy Bullins in the 15-lap race. Florence leaves Asheboro with Southeast Regional title

ASHEBORO – Florence (S.C.) Post 1 completed a sweep of the Southeast Regional in American Legion baseball, winning Sunday afternoon’s title game by 8-5 against Fuquay-Varina Post 116. Florence went 5-0 in the regional at McCrary Park, including Saturday night’s 5-4 decision in 11 innings against host Randolph County Post 45. Florence (30-5) needed just one victory Sunday, but an extra game wasn’t required as Post 1 topped Fuquay-Varina, the North Carolina state champion, for the second time in the regional.
