County schools will hold mask vote Tuesday

ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Board of Education will meet for a Special Called Meeting on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 6:30 pm at the R. Alton Cox Resource Center Auditorium at Randolph Community College. According to a release from the school system, the meeting is for the purpose of discussing the school mask mandate which has been in place since the start of the school year. The school board will hear information from the Randolph County Board of Health which precedes a vote on the system-wide mask policy, according to the announced agenda. SWR cruises to fourth round of volleyball playoffs

ASHEBORO — The Southwestern Randolph volleyball team is headed into the fourth round of the Class 2-A state playoffs after defeating West Stanly on Thursday night at Jack Castelloe Gymnasium. The Cougars won 25-9, 25-18, 25-19. It was their third sweep in the playoffs. Reagan LeRoy was credited with 39 assists and four aces, Payton Shiflet had 15 kills and 10 digs, Madelyn Smith racked up 10 kills, Carleigh Whitson provided 17 digs, Coley Shiflet made 11 digs and Josie Allred had seven kills and two blocks. Uwharrie advances to fourth round in volleyball playoffs

ASHEBORO — Uwharrie Charter Academy's volleyball team has advanced to the fourth round of the Class 1-A state playoffs after a 25-21, 25-18, 24-14 victory against visiting Gray Stone Day School on Thursday evening. During the third set, Athlete of the Week Gabi Greene scored six straight points from serve. Greene also had 12 kills, Madi Duval supplied seven kills and two blocks, Bre Brooks posted six kills and two blocks and Dacia Lowery added four kills and two blocks. The Eagles have swept all three playoff matches. UCA (20-5) travels to Murphy (22-2) for Saturday's next round.

RALEIGH — Wildlife officials in North Carolina are advising residents to expect to hear some howling this week, not because Halloween is approaching but instead because young coyotes are leaving their parents to strike out on their own.
