The fast food restaurant scene has evolved in parts of Randolph County the past few months in a few locations.

The opening of Cook Out in Randleman has resulted in a parking lot often close to being filled with automobiles on some evenings. It’s a dine-in restaurant as the chain has evolved in recent years by adding more dine-in locations in addition to the drive-thru sites.

Randleman’s Cook Out is located on West Academy Street near Sheets. It’s housed in a former bank building, with hours that range from late mornings to 3 a.m. or 4 a.m.

Cook Out has been expanding in several areas in and around the Triad. In Burlington, a full-service Cook Out has been built in a new structure and should open soon. It’s nearly across the street from a drive-thru Cook-Out, which is expected to close once the new restaurant is open and fully operational.

Whataburger, a Texas-based chain that has been operating since 1950, is coming to Randolph County later this year.

Whataburger announced its first Randolph County site will be in Archdale is at 10118 North Main St., where the opening is anticipated in the fall. That’s on a plot of land that has been vacant between Biscuitville and Archdale 24/7 Fitness.

That property of about 1.4 acres was purchased in 2023 for $1.6 million, according to reports.

Along with the Archdale location, a restaurant in High Point at 10118 North Main St. is also expected to open in the fall.

In early January, there was a groundbreaking in Hickory for what the company said would be the first Whataburger in the state.

The company announced that Whataburgers are coming to Greensboro and Winston-Salem with expected openings in the summer.  Other locations with 2025 openings will be in Gastonia and Charlotte.
