Prep basketball roundup: Providence Grove breaks through to win two boys’ games

Gabe McKoy made the second of two free-throw attempts with three seconds remaining to break a tie as host Providence Grove defeated Southwestern Randolph 56-55 to win for the first time this season in boys’ basketball in last week’s game.
Andrew Thomas led the Patriots with 14 points.
Southwestern Randolph, which received 15 points from Levi Dalke and 13 points from Kenan Sugg, recovered from a double-digit deficit to tie the game in the final minute.
Providence Grove then posted a 68-59 road victory at North Davidson with Will Dabbs supplying 23 points and Camden Jones adding 16 points.
** Southwestern Randolph avenged a loss by winning 51-46 at West Davidson with Sugg racking up 18 points and Trivett Kennedy providing 15 points.
Earlier in the week, Southwestern Randolph avenged another defeat by winning 54-46 at Wheatmore with Sugg notching 19 points and Kennedy tallying 16 points.
** Asheboro powered past Eastern Randolph 63-47 with Nirey White pouring in 24 points and Eli Johnson scoring 15. Tyler Gee had 27 points for Eastern Randolph
That outcome helped the Blue Comets bounce back from a 58-56 loss at Thomasville.
** Wheatmore won 48-46 against visiting North Moore behind Collin Dodd’s 22 points. Dodd had 15 points in the loss to Southwestern Randolph.
** High Point Andrews won 64-50 at Randleman in a Piedmont Athletic Conference opener despite Connor Cassidy’s 21 points for the Tigers.
** Trinity lost 58-49 to visiting North Carolina Leadership Academy even though Max Routh put up 27 points for the Bulldogs.
Trinity had a better result at the end of the week by socking host South Davidson 56-37, with Routh supplying 20 points. It was the team’s first victory in eight games this season.
Girls’ basketball
Southwestern Randolph won a trio of road games last week, including 61-53 at West Davidson as Maddie Strider poured in 29 points.
That result followed Southwestern Randolph’s 57-47 victory at Providence Grove.
The Cougars began the week with a 48-30 decision at Wheatmore as Jordin George turned in 14 points and Strider added 13 points.
** Providence Grove won for the second time this season by nipping host North Davidson 51-50 on Friday.
** Trinity smacked host South Davidson 62-12 with Madison Hill posting 23 points. Hill had 17 points in a 52-32 home triumph against North Carolina Leadership Academy.
** Wheatmore was a 55-17 home winner against North Moore
** Randleman lost 43-23 to visiting High Point Andrews in its Piedmont Athletic Conference opener.
** Uwharrie Charter Academy posted a 56-22 victory at Chatham Charter with Naimah Al-Arif pouring in 15 points.
UCA’s Nevaeh Staples scored 27 points in a 58-53 home victory against Pinecrest. Staples became the program’s all-time leading scorer.
** Asheboro had a 47-31 home victory against Eastern Randolph with Adalynn Scherer notching 13 points.
Asheboro’s 56-21 romp at Thomasville included 22 points from Maliyah Brady and 14 points from Scherer.
