Randleman, Southwestern Randolph and Providence Grove all advanced to the third round of the state playoffs in high school softball.
Third-round games are set for Tuesday, with fourth-round matchups Friday.
Here’s a look at this week’s results in the first and second rounds:
** Randleman, after a first-round bye in Class 4A East Region, whipped No. 16 seed Eastern Wayne, which had eliminated No. 17 seed Washington, by 11-0 on Friday behind Kinzie Ivey’s five-inning one-hitter that came with 13 strikeouts.
Ivey hit two doubles and Natalie Roach and Ella Robergs both scored two runs for the Tigers (23-2).
** Third-seeded Southwestern Randolph gave up the first run to 14th-seeded North Lenoir before winning 9-3 as winning pitcher Katelyn West drove in four runs and Kami Dunn scored three runs in Friday’s second round. Maddie Strider and Nauttica Parrish both scored two runs for the Cougars (1-4).
** No. 12 seed Uwharrie Charter Academy began play by ripping No. 21 seed Red Springs 20-1, with Emory Johnson hitting a home run and Paityn Williams notching the pitching victory.
But the Eagles (7-12) were eliminated with Friday’s 12-4 loss at fifth-seeded Bunn. Williams and Meghan Peters both had two hits.
Class 3A
As the East Region’s No. 9 seed, Providence Grove (16-10) extended its season by winning 16-4 at eighth-seeded Pender on Friday in the second round.
Adi Johnson smacked a two-run homer among her three hits and Lara Wiseman had three hits with four runs batted in. Winning pitcher Ruby Caudle and Liz Shoe each scored two runs. Campbell Ziemba struck out 13 batters in six innings.
The Patriots defeated No. 24 seed Louisburg 17-0 in the first round with Campbell Ziemba striking out eight batters in the three-inning game. Callie Lambert homered.
** No. 23 seed Eastern Randolph (3-17) fell 11-1 at No. 10 seed Northwood in a first-round matchup between Four Rivers Conference teams.
** In the West Region, No. 17 seed Wheatmore won 7-5 at No. 16 seed Mountain Heritage as Skylar Pittman scored two runs and Adalyn Boles pitched a complete game.
Wheatmore led top-seeded West Lincoln before falling 8-6 in Friday’s second round, surrendering the game’s final four runs. Adalyn Boles and Kylie Hemric had runs batted in for the Warriors (10-12).
Trinity (2-13) was left out of the field.
Class 6A
The season ended for No. 20 seed Asheboro (8-15), which lost 16-0 at No. 13 seed Asheville Roberson in the West Region’s first round.
