Prep track and field roundup: Asheboro girls soar in TAAC meet

ASHEBORO — Asheboro’s girls’ track and field team won the Triad Area Athletic Conference championships last week and the Blue Comets will be home for an even bigger competition.

Asheboro’s girls shared first place with Northern Guilford in the conference meet at Southeast Guilford, boosted by individual titles in four events.

Showers was the 100-meter champion in 11.98 seconds and winner of the long jump at 17 feet, 2 inches. She was second in the 200.

Asheboro’s Christy Price won the triple jump at 32-5½, followed by teammate Nyla Price.

Trynitee Brady of Asheboro captured the shot put at 31-1.

Asheboro’s boys were the TAAC runners-up behind Southeast Guilford.

Aaron Tyson of Asheboro won three events – the high jump at 6 feet, the pole vault at 14 feet and the triple jump at 41-8. He was second in the long jump.

Teammate Michael Mark won the 110 hurdles in 15.31 seconds and he was second in the 300 hurdles.

** Asheboro is the host for the Class 6A Central Regional meet Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

 

Central Carolina 3-A Conference

There were several individual champions from Randolph County in the league meet, though East Davidson’s girls and host West Davidson’s boys were team champions. Wheatmore was the boys’ runner-up.

In girls’ events, Providence Grove’s Laurel Bernhardt won two events – 800 (2:30.30) and 1,600 (5:27.38), while teammate Lyndsay Broder was the winner in the 300 hurdles (49.24). The Patriots also won the 1,600 relay (4:32.25).

Wheatmore’s Kylyn Surratt won the triple jump (31-6¾), Kahmarii McNeill claimed the 100 hurdles (18.47) and Scarlett Hildreth was first in the 3,200 (13:05.13)

On the boys’ side, winners included Wheatmore’s Noah Wyrick in the shot put (41-11), Wheatmore’s Ayden Fitzgerald in the 3,200 (10:42.83), Providence Grove’s Nick Straughn in 110 hurdles (16.84) and Trinity’s Giovanni Jaimes in the 800 (2:10.51).

 

Four Rivers Conference

At Robbins, Northwood won the boys’ and girls’ team championships in the meet at North Moore, though three athletes from Randolph County were multiple-event winners.

For girls, Southwestern Randolph sprinter Kiersten Litell won the 100 (13.01) and the 200 (27.75).

Eastern Randolph had thrower Mirianna Corea as a two-event winner by capturing the discus (129-7) and shot put (39-6). Also from Eastern Randolph, Roxanne Davis was the top high jumper at 5-0.

For boys, Eastern Randolph’s Caden Revelle won the 100 (11.37) and high jump (6-2).

Southwestern Randolph’s 400 relay of Thomas Costello, Leland Davis, Devonte Dukes and Devon Jenkins won in 45.22 seconds. In the team standings, the Cougars shared second place with Jordan-Matthews.
