Prep wrestling: Eastern Randolph looks strong in home tourney
RAMSEUR — Eastern Randolph won four of five matchups in dual meets as part of the Greg Hardin Invitational on Saturday.
David Lambright, Trevor Young and Maddox Carson all went 5-0 for the host Wildcats, while Armani Tapia-Sosa, Ethan Thomas, Joshua Watson, Lucas Kennedy, Trevor Crabtree and James Combs were 4-1.
Eastern Randolph defeated Albemarle, Cary, South Garner and North Iredell, but it lost to East Wilkes.
Southwestern Randolph beat North Moore, though the Cougars lost to Apex Friendship, South Davidson and East Wilkes. Nathan Garner went 4-0 for the Cougars.
Phillip Reed Rumble
At Kernersville, Trinity entered a limited roster had had two champions and a third-place finisher Saturday at the Kernersville Recreation and Event Center.
Jeven Palmeri won at 106 pounds with a 4-0 record capped by defeating Central Davidson’s Landon Little 11-4.
Heavyweight Joseph Trahan dominated by pinning three opponents and securing a major decision. He flattened Greensboro Grimsley’s Kanye Brown in 2:32 of the title bout.
Omega Edge, a 132-pounder, was third for Trinity, beating Asheboro’s Oscar Zelaya 10-3 in a wrestleback round. Edge had a 5-1 record, while Zelaya went 3-2.
Asheboro and Providence Grove didn’t have a place finisher.
Sarah Wilkes Invitational
At Eden, the Wheatmore duo of Ayden Sumners and Dominic Hittepole captured individual championships in dominating fashion at Eden Morehead.
Sumners, a 126-pounder, pinned three wrestlers in bouts that all took less than 45 seconds and recorded a second-period technical fall. His fastest pin came in 21 seconds against Northern Guilford’s Cole Mitchell in the final.
Hittepole’s second first-period pin of the day came in a 31-second bout in the 190 final against Northern Guilford’s Jadyn Bryant.
Wheatmore’s Spencer Moore was the 150 runner-up, losing via a 48-second pin in the final to Northern Guilford’s Jack Gibson. Moore earlier recorded two first-period pins. Teammate Landon Watkins at 157 pounds was fourth with a 3-2 record.
Randleman’s Alex Raymundo (113 pounds) and Lloy Bosan (126) both placed third. Bosan produced a 5-1 record and Raymundo went 4-1.
Rutherfordton-Spindale Central won with 192 points, edging Northwest Guilford by a half-point. Wheatmore placed fifth with 123 points in the 19-team field.
Southeast Alamance Stampede
In girls’ competition at Haw River, Asheboro’s Alaina Scherer won at 235 pounds with a 3-0 record. She recorded three first-period pins, ending with sticking Raleigh Millbrook’s Isla Daniels in 1:17.
Asheboro’s Isla Aguirra was third at 165.
