Prep wrestling: Trinity rules mats in home tourney

TRINITY — With six individual champions, host Trinity rolled to the team title in the Trinity Invitational on Saturday.
Jeven Palmeri (106 pounds), Aiden Burkholder (113), Stephen Cross (120), Edgar Vasquez (126), Omar Edge (132) and Joseph Trahan (285) were Trinity’s titlists.
Palmeri pinned North Stanly’s Connor Faulkner in 1:13 to claim the top spot, Burkholder pinned Randleman’s Alex Raymundo in 1:39 of the title bout, Cross won 10-2 in the final against Greensboro Grimsley’s Tinashe Chitiyo, Edge bounced Asheboro’s Oscar Zelaya by a technical fall to capture the division, Vasquez controlled Eden Morehead’s Tyler Kendrick for a 13-1 finals decision, and Trahan had an earlier 44-second pin and then won the final by forfeit.
The Bulldogs racked up 217 points in the 12-team competition, with Eden Morehead the runner-up with 187½. Asheboro was fifth with 92.
Hezekyah Matson (138), Simeon Hammett (144), Addam Bernal (157) and Grayson Carroll (190) placed third for Trinity.
Asheboro had Zelaya (132) as a runner-up, while Esteban Santos (113), Omar Basyouny (120) and Quanta McRae (175) all placed third.
Also in the field, Southwestern Randolph was 10th and Randleman placed 11th. Southwestern Randolph’s Leland Davis (150) was a runner-up and teammate Nathan Garner (165) placed third. Randleman’s Raymundo (113) was a runner-up.
Bobby Abernathy Invitational
Dylan Harris (106) and Domnic Hittepole (190) were individual championships for Wheatmore in the 16-team tournament at Piedmont.
Harris needed less than a minute for two pins and he recorded a major decision to reach the final, where he notched a third-period technical fall against Central Academy’s Andie Hernandez.
Hittepole posted an 8-2 victory against Charlotte Providence’s Colton Bogan in the title bout after recording two first-period pins in earlier rounds.
Brodie Bates of the Warriors was the 165 runner-up. He was pinned by Maiden’s Michael McCall at 3:14 of the final.
Piedmont was the team champion, edging Maiden. Wheatmore placed fifth.
Nick Sgori Invitational
At Kernersville, Jeremiah Payne of Providence Grove claimed the 120-pound championship in the tournament at Bishop McGuinness.
Payne won 11-5 against Jordan Sweet of West Wilkes. Payne secured two earlier pins.
Runners-up for Providence Grove were Skyler Handerson(144) and Malachi Combo (175), while Aiden Poplin and Charles Villaggio placed third.
Montgomery Central’s Jerry Ceraphin pinned Henderson in 1:05 in the title bout. Combo had two pins before he was stuck in 1:44 of the final by Imon Freeman of Montgomery Centra.
Providence Grave placed fifth among 13 teams. West Wilkes was the champion, followed by Montgomery Central.
Queen of the Mat Invitational
Asheboro’s Brianna Munoz in the 126 class and Grace Redding in the 235 division claimed second places the tournament at West Davidson.
Munoz won two matches before falling 9-0 to South Stanly’s Mary Huneycutt. Redding record two pins before she was a second-period pin victim in the final against Central Davidson’s Ashely Acuna.
Crusader Duals
At Raleigh, Uwharrie Charter Academy was the winner of the tournament at Cardinal Gibbons with five lopsided victories.
The Eagles topped Knightdale 84-0, drubbed East Wake 78-6, hammer Harnett Central 75-6, stopped Cardinal Gibbons 50-21 and toppled Topsail 50-21.
Ayven Virasone Chitavong, Paxton Kearns, Huntley Adcock, Brennan Worrell, Lorenzo Alston and Michael Shropshire all won five matches.
