Rains pelt region, impact Randolph County, from Tropical Storm Chantal
The remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal made a big impact in Randolph County and surrounding counties Sunday and Monday.
Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of Randolph County in an extended series of advisories throughout Sunday and into Monday.
The main areas of concern for the county came in the eastern parts, with Ramseur, Franklinville and Liberty areas specifically identified. There were flash flood warnings that included parts of Randolph County extending across a period of more than 10 hours, while those were spread across a longer time frame in some adjacent counties.
Tornado warnings were issued in Orange and Alamance counties.
Even with a downgrading to tropical depression, by the time it reached central North Carolina, the impacts were widespread.
Parts of I-40/85 in Orange County and Alamance County were closed Monday because of flooded highways. In Orange County, some residents in Chapel Hill were forced to leave their homes.
Travel advisories were issued throughout the region, including in Chatham, Moore, Alamance and Orange counties.
Flood totals for the Haw River were the second-highest on record, sitting only behind Hurricane Fran in 1996.
The Associated Press reported more than 34,000 customers in some hard hit areas were without power by Monday morning.
