Wheatmore’s lone conference defeat came by 5-4 at Southwestern Randolph. The Warriors avenged that loss a few weeks later with a 6-3 victory. Prep Notes: Randleman pulls volleyball surprise; Asheboro starts strong in soccer league play

RANDLEMAN – Randleman served up a three-set sweep of Southwestern Randolph last week to hand the Cougars their first loss in Piedmont Athletic Conference volleyball. The Tigers used 17 digs and six kills from Haley Hinshaw, 23 assists and 14 digs from Kenzie Roach and 13 digs and 11 kills from Chloe Dixon. Karli Kennington supplied 29 digs. Former Asheboro standout Coe released from CFL team

Former Asheboro High School standout athlete Nick Coe was released from the roster of a Canadian Football League team. The Edmonton Elks released Coe, a 25-year-old defensive lineman, on Sept. 13. He had played in two games this season for the Elks. After playing for Asheboro during high school, Coe went on to a college career with Auburn before he was undrafted. The Elks made the move to release Coe when they signed receiver Lucky Johnson. The two previous years, Coe spent time on reserve units or practice squads with the NFL’s New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.

ASHEBORO – Steve Luck didn’t stay away from high school athletics for long. The former Asheboro High School athletics director is the new commissioner of the Mid-Piedmont Conference. “Those ADs in the Mid-Piedmont know me and I know them,” Luck said. “I’m working with six ADs and those guys are good at what they do.” Luck replaces long-time commissioner Charlie Chapman, who reduced his workload and yet remains commissioner of the Piedmont Athletic Conference.
