Asheboro City Schools to make mask decision Thursday

ASHEBORO — The August 12 meeting of the Asheboro City School Board will see the elected board decide on mask wearing for the beginning of the 2021-22 school year. The first day of classes for all students is August 24. Randolph County Schools and Uwharrie Charter announced that masks would be optional following July meetings of their school boards. Gov. Roy Cooper eliminated the statewide mask mandate in July but recommended that students in grades K-8 wear masks at school. ASHEBORO — Asheboro mayor David Smith, who first elected to that position in 2009, will run unopposed in November’s election, while there are six candidates for four spots on the city council. Incumbent council members Clark Bell, Walker Moffitt and Katie Snuggs will have challenges from Kelly Heath, William (Bill) McCaskill and Delilah Perkins Warner. City school system announces administrative leadership changes

ASHEBORO — The Asheboro City Board of Education approved several administrative changes for the 2021-2022 at their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, July 15. “We’re pleased to announce Ms. Julie Brady will be the new principal at South Asheboro Middle School and Mr. Chris Burian will move into his first principal position at Charles W. Asheboro High student awarded Park Scholarship to NC State

ASHEBORO — Ferdinand “Freddy” Ray Kelley, son of J.W. and Kathy Kelley of Asheboro, was awarded the Park Scholarship to attend N.C. State University in the fall. Kelley graduated from Asheboro High School on June 3 where he served as drum major of the Band and Captain of the Swim, Cross Country, and Tennis Teams. He also served as Science Olympiad team Captain and attended the NC School of Science and Math Summer. He was first chair all-district bassoonist. Kelley plans to major in biochemistry and sociology.
