ASHEBORO — Downtown Asheboro will be filled with activity this weekend as the summer concert series continues Friday with Departure, a Journey tribute band, at Bicentennial Park. On Saturday, the Zooland Region 30th Annual Antique Car Show kicks off at 9am and a BMX Show will start at 10am on Fayetteville Street. All of the downtown events will feature local vendors.

Deadline nears for local election filings

ASHEBORO – The filing deadline for municipal elections ends at noon Friday for most of Randolph County communities. By the beginning of this week, 25 people filed as candidates across nine different spots on the ballot. That includes seven within the City of Asheboro (three for the city council, three for the board of education and incumbent mayor David Smith). City council members Clark Bell, Walker Moffitt and Katie Snuggs also filed to keep their seats. Wake Forest teen collects title in Asheboro

ASHEBORO — Davis Wotnosky of Wake Forest won the North Carolina Junior Boys’ 14-and-under championship last week at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course. Wotnosky shot rounds of 71 and 69 for an even-par 140, giving him a one-shot victory on John John Santospago (69-72) of Charlotte. Matthews’ Caedmon Albertyn and Winston-Salem’s Luke Tisdale shot 144s to tie for third place, while Wallburg’s Lincoln Newton, Morganton’s Alex Bock and Waxhaw’s Lucas Cron shot 146s to share fifth place in the 55-golfer field. Zoo announces red wolf pup names

ASHEBORO — The N.C. Zoo announced the names of the six red wolf pups (four females, two males) born on the guest view habitat. The public was invited to vote in an online poll from a list of names provided by the Zoo’s red wolf keepers. The names are based on rivers in the Southeastern U.S. where red wolves used to range. The naming poll had over 6,500 responses. The chosen names are Eno, Harper, Pearl, Warrior, Fisher, Catawba.

Over 30% of Randolph County is vaccinated

ASHEBORO — The Centers for Disease Control reported that 43,649 Randolph County residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Over 64% of the county’s citizens over 65 years of age are vaccinated. The CDC estimates that 47% of the total U.S. population is now vaccinated. In the past week, just 927 people were tested for COVID-19 in Randolph County, which includes those needing testing for travel. There were 20 positive cases and no hospitalizations reported in the last week in Randolph County.
