College Notes: Hill picks up first win, league award

Uwharrie Charter Academy alum Hunter Hill was named Rookie Pitcher of the Week recently in the USA South Conference for baseball. Hill, a North Carolina Wesleyan freshman from Asheboro, threw four shutout innings across two relief outings. He gave up a total of four hits with four strikeouts and without a walk. Hill, a right-hander, logged the victory in N.C. Wesleyan’s 3-2 victory at Greensboro College. The result marked his first career decision. Providence Grove’s undefeated softball team sealed at least a share of the regular-season title in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. The Patriots began this week with a 17-0 overall record and, with two conference games left, a 10-0 record in the PAC. Randleman’s baseball team finished its regular season league schedule with a 12-0 record against PAC opponents. The Tigers will end up with at least a four-game edge in the standings. Dylan Hodges’ mark of 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump is tied for the second-best leap in the state this year behind Kyzaiah Stone, a senior from Clayton Cleveland. Wheatmore | baseball Hales did important work on the pitching mound and at the plate as the Warriors won a pair of games against Eastern Randolph. Brooks Brannon | Randleman, baseball Brannon had two big games at the plate as the Tigers opened Piedmont Athletic Conference play with a pair of victories against Eastern Randolph. They had posted a non-league win against North Davidson on a neutral field. Brannon, a senior catcher, drove in 12 runs in two games against Eastern Randolph. Eastern Randolph’s Brody Gardner hits a double against visiting North Moore in a baseball game Friday. North Moore won 11-8. Providence Grove softball coach Tim Brown picked up his 100th career victory when the Patriots defeated host Southern Guilford 14-0 to open the season last week. Assistant coach Andy Beane has been there for each of those victories. Makayla McClain, who homered twice in that game, scored four runs for Providence Grove.
