Catch him if you can: Southwestern Randolph’s Cole off to blazing start

Catch him if you can: Southwestern Randolph’s Cole off to blazing start

ASHEBORO – Adam Cole doesn’t need an encore, though after a six-touchdown performance in Southwestern Randolph’s most recent game that would be difficult. But the versatile junior has more to accomplish. With the Cougars off to a 2-0 start going into Friday night’s home game against West Davidson, Cole figures to be at the forefront of the game plan. “There’s a decent number (of plays called) for me,” Cole said. Just determining how he might be used could be the tricky part. He’s considered a running back, but his hybrid role often calls for him to be lined up in…

Providence Grove builds early success

ASHEBORO — Providence Grove’s football team is in a groove early in the season. The Patriots attempt to match a school record for the best start to a season when Asheboro visits Friday night. For just the second time in school history, Providence Grove holds a 3-0 record. The most-recent result was last week’s 54-0 whipping of visiting Jordan-Matthews. The only time Providence Grove – a school that opened in 2008 – began a season with four consecutive victories came in 2009. Combined with winning their last two games of the past season (played in the spring), the Patriots hold…

Big point totals become area theme

ASHEBORO — Big point totals were the order of the week for area high school football games. Each of the Friday games involving Randolph County teams had at least one team reaching the 40-point mark. Other than the only intra-county matchup that involved Eastern Randolph’s 49-7 whipping of host Asheboro, here’s a recap of games: EAST DAVIDSON 37, WHEATMORE 22 Thursday at Trinity, the Warriors (1-1) couldn’t keep up in the home game despite 241 passing yards and two touchdown throws from Ben Walker. Cade Hamilton was charted with 102 receiving yards in the loss. SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH 55, SOUTH STANLY…

County teams send strong opening messages

County teams send strong opening messages

ASHEBORO — What an opening week for Randolph County football teams. The seven football-playing schools went a combined 6-1, with the lone loss coming in the only intra-county matchup (Asheboro defeating Randleman). In the other five games, the county teams outscored their opponents by a combined score of 177-31. The most notable might have been Eastern Randolph’s whipping of Eastern Alamance, which has been a Class 3-A power for most of the past decade. And don’t discount what Trinity did, with its decision against Chatham Central marking its first triumph against an opponent other than Jordan-Matthews in its last 24…

High scoring first week for county football teams

ASHEBORO — Six of the county’s seven varsity football programs begin the second week of the season undefeated following a high-scoring opening week of high school football. Here’s a look at the game outcomes from the first week of the season. Asheboro Blue Comets 20 Randleman Tigers 7 RANDLEMAN — The Blue Comets of Asheboro shocked the Randleman Tigers Friday night in the season opener for both teams. The in-county rivalry game, which was a non-conference game, pitted two teams coming off vastly different seasons last year. The Blue Comets were 0-7 last season while the Randleman Tigers played an…

Blue Comets collect early prize

Asheboro pulls opening surprise at Randleman RANDLEMAN — Asheboro’s football team won for the first time in more than 600 days to open the season. Now the Blue Comets will have their sights set on more conquests. After a winless record in seven games when the 2020 season was shifted to this past spring, Asheboro might have been largely dismissed as a factor entering the new campaign. That was far from the case in Friday night’s season-opening 20-7 conquering of Randleman. “We proved that we got the talent,” linebacker / running back Qamelo Butler said. Asheboro plays its home opener…

New football season begins with chance to upgrade point totals

New football season begins with chance to upgrade point totals

Getting the offenses going could be the main mission for Randolph County football teams as the season begins this week. The scheduled openers come Friday night. The 2020 season was wiped out in its traditional manner because of the pandemic. Teams played that season during the spring semester of 2021, so the offseason was shortened. Area teams will hope that was enough to figure out how to crank up the offenses. RANDLEMAN Randleman was an exception to the sluggish offenses for area teams. The Tigers had nine players score at least one touchdown a year ago. Randleman is 32-3 across…
