Those results were a 25-27, 25-14, 25-12, 23-25, 15-12 escape at Eastern Randolph in a Piedmont Athletic Conference opener, a 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 non-conference decision against visiting Oak Grove and a 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-12 toppling of visiting Wheatmore in another PAC match. It safe to say that it’s heating up in Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball. Teams are chasing Providence Grove with a couple of weeks to play, but it’s clear the Patriots might not be in cruise control. “We’re banged up,” Providence Grove coach Wes Luther said. “Who can survive the longest? The 1,000-point milestone is in the works for a couple of area girls’ basketball players. Gracyn Hall of Randleman reached that mark with a couple of strong games last week. Autumn Gentry of Trinity entered this week within range of 1,000. The Bulldogs are slated for a game Friday at Uwharrie Charter Academy and a make-up game Saturday at Southwestern Randolph. Hall and Gentry are juniors, so there could be plenty of time for their point totals to swell. Hall racked up 21 points and 13 rebounds in last week’s 51-34 victory at Trinity. High school’s use of gym works well for all parties ASHEBORO — Use of the Asheboro Recreation Center is almost nonstop and that’s expected to continue through the winter. The boost in activity comes for various reasons, largely with Asheboro High School using the venue for basketball and wrestling as the gym on campus is part of a renovation project. “The relationship we have with Parks and Rec and what they’ve really done for us has been great,” Asheboro High School athletics director Steve Luck said. “They’ve just reached out tremendously. Southwestern Randolph  |  Boys’ Basketball  |  Junior Adkins poured in 20 points as the Cougars secured a 61-48 non-conference victory last week at Chatham Central. It’s a huge point total for the junior considering Southwestern Randolph has struggled at times on the offensive end. Coupled with the previous Friday’s road victory at Randleman (when Adkins had 12 points), that’s back-to-back wins for the Cougars, who improved to 5-4 overall. The result against Chatham Central marked only the third time this season that the Cougars reached the 60-point mark.

Wheatmore swimmer Spencer Hall   Several athletes from around Randolph County signed letters of intent or made college commitments when the early signing period began last week. Some of these had been previously announced intentions. Baseball players were among those most active. From Randleman’s 2021 state-championship team, five players confirmed their intentions. They were Brooks Brannon to North Carolina, Kaden Ethier to Montreat, Braylen Hayes to UNC Greensboro, Trey Way to Virginia Tech and Ryan White to Western Carolina. PLEASANT GARDEN – Faith Christian School twins Karrie Gaines and Kylie Gaines were the top two runners in the North Carolina Christian School Association’s state cross country meet Thursday at Hagan-Stone Park. The duo led a wave of strong finishes for Faith Christian, which secured the team championship for the second season in a row. Karrie Gaines posted a time of 20 minutes, 27.81 seconds on the 5-kilometer course to repeat as individual champion. Kylie Gaines was next in 21:42.18. RAMSEUR — A week off prior to opening the state playoffs might be a good omen for Eastern Randolph’s football team. When that happened during the past spring for the state playoffs, it worked out. “We really played our best game against Clinton,” coach Burton Cates said. “You’ve got to look at the positives.” The situation is different, though, this season.
