Wheatmore player makes comeback to playing field

Riley Strickland (Bob Sutton / Randolph Record) TRINITY – Riley Strickland says he’s excited to participate in high school sports again about nine months after a scary incident in a basketball game. The Wheatmore senior, who was the starting quarterback a year ago, returned to action with the football team in Friday night’s loss to Bishop McGuinness. “It feels good to be back,” Strickland said. “Hopefully, we can get the win next week.” Strickland decided in the spring that he wouldn’t play football as a senior. “I thought I was done,” he said. “After the first game, I had to…

Wheatmore Warriors search for winning ways, endure loss at East Davidson

THOMASVILLE – Wheatmore’s bid to make football inroads is bound to be a tussle, so a frustration-filled second half Monday night against East Davidson became troublesome on multiple levels. “The disappointing part is we worked so hard,” Wheatmore two-way lineman Ashtin Bennett said. “No excuse to come out the way we did the second half. Sheffield is a Trinity alum and most recently an assistant coach there, though he’s a former head coach at…

Jacob Sheffield (Courtesy photo) TRINITY – Jacob Sheffield is the new football coach at Wheatmore, but his ties to the school extend more than a decade. Most recently, Sheffield has been an assistant coach at rival Trinity, his alma mater. He said he has “fallen on both sides of the tracks” when it comes to the neighboring schools. He takes the vacancy left when Philip Yarbrough resigned after seven seasons as Wheatmore’s football coach. The Warriors were 2-8 last year. Sheffield, who’ll turn 37 in May, said it appears a foundation has been established at Wheatmore. When he met with…
