ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Karrie Gaines

Faith Christian, cross country Gaines, a senior, is the individual championship in the North Carolina Christian School Association, winning last Thursday at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville. She ran the 3.1 miles in 21 minutes, 36.36 seconds. Her winning margin was about 22 seconds on Bethel Christian senior Emmalee Rhem. Gaines won the NCCSA individual state championship for the third time in four years.

(Randolph Record file photo) KERNERSVILLE – Brecken Snotherly of Eastern Randolph placed eighth in the Class 1-A state cross country meet Saturday at Ivy Redmon Complex. Snotherly, a senior, posted a time of 21 minutes, 21.66 seconds. In Class 2-A girls, Providence Grove had a team entry, placing 11th. The Patriots were paced by a trio of juniors. The Blue Comets called off two matches last week and another for Monday night. Athletics director Wes Berrier said five team members were hit by COVID-19, so team activities were shut down.
