Southwestern Randolph’s football team kept the big offensive numbers coming. The Cougars topped visiting Starmount 42-30 on Friday night in a non-league game. The matchup was a late schedule addition when Southwestern Randolph’s scheduled matchup with Albemarle was nixed. The Cougars have scored more than 40 points in their last three games. That came in various doses in Friday night’s 28-14 triumph against visiting Asheboro. “Anytime you can beat one of the bigger schools in the county, that’s huge,” Providence Grove coach Calvin Brown said. ASHEBORO — Providence Grove’s football team is in a groove early in the season. The Patriots attempt to match a school record for the best start to a season when Asheboro visits Friday night. For just the second time in school history, Providence Grove holds a 3-0 record. The most-recent result was last week’s 54-0 whipping of visiting Jordan-Matthews. ASHEBORO — Big point totals were the order of the week for area high school football games. Each of the Friday games involving Randolph County teams had at least one team reaching the 40-point mark. ASHEBORO — What an opening week for Randolph County football teams. The seven football-playing schools went a combined 6-1, with the lone loss coming in the only intra-county matchup (Asheboro defeating Randleman). In the other five games, the county teams outscored their opponents by a combined score of 177-31. The most notable might have been Eastern Randolph’s whipping of Eastern Alamance, which has been a Class 3-A power for most of the past decade. ASHEBORO — Randleman third baseman Hunter Atkins was selected as the PAC-7 Player of the Year in baseball. Atkins's teammate Andrew Cox was picked as Pitcher of the Year in the league for the eventual Class 2-A state champions. The league’s Coach of the Year is Glen Hunt of Providence Grove. In the Mid-Piedmont Conference, Southwestern Randolph’s Bryson Hogan was picked as Player of the Year. Asheboro’s Brett Hoogkamp of the regular-season co-championship team was named Coach of the Year for the league.

East-West All-Star ASHEBORO -- When playing for Providence Grove, Jonathan Foust made steady improvements on the basketball court the past couple of seasons. “Once he got comfortable, he did some really good things,” coach Wes Luther said.
