Jalaya Showers of Asheboro has become a record-setting sprinter. (Bob Sutton/Randolph Record) ASHEBORO – Jalaya Showers has been a headliner for the Asheboro girls’ track and field team. She’s not alone among the Blue Comets. “This team is gunning for all the records,” coach Vincent Cable said. Asheboro set a brisk pace in many events in capturing the Randolph County Championships on Tuesday. Showers, a sophomore who recently became a school record-holder sprinter, won the 100 and 200 meters and participated on two winning relays. Eastern Randolph’s Brecken Snotherly has qualified for the Class 1-A state meet in two events. Trinity  | Boys Basketball Moffitt, a sophomore, racked up 35 points in the team’s lone game of the week. That nearly matched the total scored by the opponent in the Bulldogs’ 73-44 victory against host Eastern Randolph. Trinity also received 16 points from Dominic Payne and 12 points from Brandon Campbell in the game. The outcome means the Bulldogs improved their record to 12-3. It put the team at 4-1 in true road games.

Uwharrie Charter Academy  |  Wrestling  Palma secured first place in the girls’ division of the Holy Angels Invitational last week in Charlotte. It was a rare event set up with several brackets for girls. Palma captured first place at 113 pounds. In the title match, she defeated Martha Dominguez of Purnell Swett with a 50-second pin.

Wheatmore swimmer Spencer Hall   Several athletes from around Randolph County signed letters of intent or made college commitments when the early signing period began last week. Some of these had been previously announced intentions. Baseball players were among those most active. From Randleman’s 2021 state-championship team, five players confirmed their intentions. They were Brooks Brannon to North Carolina, Kaden Ethier to Montreat, Braylen Hayes to UNC Greensboro, Trey Way to Virginia Tech and Ryan White to Western Carolina.
