ASHEBORO – Ten Randolph County residents filed to run for office during the first five hours of filing. Three of those are seeking to retain spots on the City of Asheboro’s city council. Turnout strong for early voting in Randolph County

The election sites, like this one in Asheboro, were busy at times during the past couple of weeks. (PJ Ward-Brown/Randolph Record) Almost 27,000 residents cast ballots during early voting in Randolph County in advance of this week’s general election. The turnout proved particularly heavy on the final days. Of the 15 days used for early voting in the county, three of the heaviest four turnouts came in the last three days. ASHEBORO -- Early voting begins Oct. 20 and runs daily, except on Sundays, through Nov. 5. Election Day is Nov. 8. Early voting runs from 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays (Oct. 22 and 29), and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 5. There are four early voting locations. Randolph County residents can cast ballots at any of those. On Election Day, voters can only vote at their designated precincts. ASHEBORO – There will still be weekend early voting in Randolph County for the 2022 general election, but there will be a slightly different twist. The Randolph County Board of Elections voted to nix a Sunday early voting date for this fall. Instead, there will be three Saturdays when early voting is conducted. Melissa Johnson, who’s director of the county’s Board of Elections, said there was interest from some citizens to restore a Sunday date at last week’s August meeting. Only one contested race for Archdale positions

ARCHDALE – An at-large spot on the city council will be the only contested race in Archdale’s elections in November. Incumbent Lorie McCroskey will have a challenge from Kelly Grooms for that position. McCroskey was appointed to the council last summer when there was reshuffling upon the retirement of long-time mayor Bert Stone. For the other three spots on the ballot, only incumbents entered by the time filing ended Friday. Mayor Lewis Dorsett, Ward 1 councilman Larry Warlick and Ward 4 councilman John Glass are unopposed.

Randolph County voters turn out early

ASHEBORO – Nearly 4,000 more voters in Randolph County cast early ballots for this month’s primary compared to a similar election cycle four years ago. With four early voting sites, the total number of voters in Randolph County checked in at 10,205. Fourteen days of early voting concluded Saturday afternoon. Saturday’s number of voters was 1,055. The primary day was set for Tuesday. In 2018, the total number of early voters in the county was 6,376. ASHEBORO — Turnout has varied at Randolph County’s four locations for early voting during the first few days for the primary. The busiest location has been at the Randolph County Board of Elections on North Fayetteville Street in Asheboro. That site had the largest number of votes in each of the first three days (324, 308, 130). The next most popular early voting site has been Braxton Craven School gym in Trinity, where 142 votes were cast the first day followed by 136 and 58.
