Randolph County School System extends superintendent’s contract

ASHEBORO — The top executive of the Randolph County School System will be at the helm of the county’s largest public school system through at least the 2026-27 school year, following action from the Randolph County School Board this week. ASHEBORO – Larry Reid, a radio personality in Randolph County for more than three decades, died Saturday at age 62. He spent most of his career at WKXR and WZOO, creating an identity on the air and also serving as station manager. He was named honorary mayor of Asheboro the day prior to his passing. He succumbed to an undisclosed illness. A prayer vigil was held last week in Asheboro a few days prior to his death. Southwestern Randolph set to induct first class into Hall of Fame

ASHEBORO – The first class for the Southwestern Randolph Hall of Fame will be inducted this week and it’s quite a blast from the past. Fourteen individuals were selected for the honor. A ceremony will be held in the school cafeteria Friday prior to the football game vs. Albemarle. The group will also be recognized at halftime of the game. Former Klaussner Furniture workers react to shutdown

ASHEBORO – A lawsuit has been filed against Klaussner Furniture after the Asheboro-based company abruptly ceased operations last week. Former employees of the manufacturing company allege that Klaussner Furniture didn’t provide proper notice of the shutdown. Information in notification from Klaussner Furniture that was listed as part of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act shows that 884 jobs were to be lost. The WARN Act requires employers to provide 60 days’ notice. The shortened time frame on the notice came from what appeared to be unforeseen business issues. Power restored after storms strike Ramseur area

RAMSEUR – More than 1,000 power outages were reported in Randolph County after severe thunderstorms rolled through late Saturday afternoon. The hardest hit area was in Ramseur, where the total outages exceeded 950. By Sunday afternoon, there were no outages in the county listed on Duke Energy’s “Outages in the Carolinas” map. Flood advisories were also issued by the National Weather Service for parts of Randolph County stemming from the line of storms. Locations in Guilford County and Alamance County also reported power outages.

Senate resolution honors Tillman’s legacy

A North Carolina state senate resolution honoring the life and memory of former state Sen. Jerry Tillman passed last week. Tillman spent nine terms in office representing Randolph County before stepping down in 2020. He died Feb. 4 at age 82 in Greensboro. Numerous schools have stellar results for individuals ASHEBORO – Asheboro’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams were superior in the Randolph County Championships on Tuesday. But the Blue Comets had plenty of company from entrants from other schools when it came to special individual performances. On the girls’ side, Brecken Snotherly of Eastern Randolph won four events on the track and Randleman’s Gracie Beane was strong in field events.
