Payton Shiflet Southwestern Randolph | Senior | Volleyball Payton Shiflet, a senior, posted the 1,000th kill of her career when the Cougars knocked off Central Davidson in four sets last week. The milestone was part of her 34-kill, nine-dig outing as Southwestern Randolph won for the 12th time in 16 matches this season. Raegan LeRoy’s 56 assists providing a boost to Shiflet’s efforts. It was the team’s second victory of the week after earlier sweeping Wheatmore.

ASHEBORO – Adam Cole doesn’t need an encore, though after a six-touchdown performance in Southwestern Randolph’s most recent game that would be difficult. Asheboro native fulfills dream of playing at Grand Ole Opry ASHEBORO — It was a round-about way, but the destination was what mattered for Trent Callicutt. He performed at the Grand Ole Opry. For a musician, Saturday night’s opportunity became a lifetime achievement in Nashville, Tenn. “It was everything I hoped for and more,” Callicutt said. “The Grand Ole Opry is the pinnacle. Prep baseball awards go to area players, coaches

ASHEBORO — Randleman third baseman Hunter Atkins was selected as the PAC-7 Player of the Year in baseball. Atkins's teammate Andrew Cox was picked as Pitcher of the Year in the league for the eventual Class 2-A state champions. The league’s Coach of the Year is Glen Hunt of Providence Grove. In the Mid-Piedmont Conference, Southwestern Randolph’s Bryson Hogan was picked as Player of the Year. Asheboro’s Brett Hoogkamp of the regular-season co-championship team was named Coach of the Year for the league.
