It safe to say that it’s heating up in Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball. Teams are chasing Providence Grove with a couple of weeks to play, but it’s clear the Patriots might not be in cruise control. “We’re banged up,” Providence Grove coach Wes Luther said. “Who can survive the longest? Wrestling teams from Uwharrie Charter Academy in Class 1-A and Trinity in Class 2-A advanced through the first two rounds of the dual team state tournament. UCA and Trinity were both home teams for the first and second rounds Monday. These teams moved on to third- and potentially fourth-round meets Wednesday. The 1,000-point milestone is in the works for a couple of area girls’ basketball players. Gracyn Hall of Randleman reached that mark with a couple of strong games last week. Autumn Gentry of Trinity entered this week within range of 1,000. The Bulldogs are slated for a game Friday at Uwharrie Charter Academy and a make-up game Saturday at Southwestern Randolph. Hall and Gentry are juniors, so there could be plenty of time for their point totals to swell. Hall racked up 21 points and 13 rebounds in last week’s 51-34 victory at Trinity. Trinity  | Boys Basketball Moffitt, a sophomore, racked up 35 points in the team’s lone game of the week. That nearly matched the total scored by the opponent in the Bulldogs’ 73-44 victory against host Eastern Randolph. Trinity also received 16 points from Dominic Payne and 12 points from Brandon Campbell in the game. The outcome means the Bulldogs improved their record to 12-3. It put the team at 4-1 in true road games.

Trinity | Boys Basketball | Sophomore  Payne produced a couple of strong outings as the Bulldogs split two Piedmont Athletic Conference games. It began with the sophomore guard’s 20-point effort in a 53-46 decision against rival Wheatmore. That pushed the Bulldogs’ record to 8-0. Later in the week, Payne racked up 18 points in a 61-54 loss to Uwharrie Charter Academy. Ashton Troutman, a previous winner of the honor this season, had 27 points in that game for UCA.

ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Schools announced their "STAR 3" Students for September, 2021. STAR 3 students are recognized for being “Respectful, Responsible, and Doing the Right Thing.” The Board of Education recognizes these students and their accomplishments at a designated board meeting. A school-based committee handles the selection of each school’s awards recipient. Family members and school staff are invited to a student’s recognition at a Board of Education meeting. Annual “Volley for the Cure” raises funds, awareness for worthy cause TRINITY — So many good vibes stemmed from last week’s volleyball match between Trinity and Wheatmore. The occasion was dubbed “Volley for the Cure,” designated as an event to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer and to raise funds for the cause. It’s a decade-long tradition connected to the Wheatmore team. “The whole gym is decked out in pink,” Wheatmore coach Sarah Beth Campbell said.
