Area track and field teams go to the regionals this week following some strong performances in conference championships.
The Class 3-A Midwest Regional is Saturday at Robinson, Class 2-A Midwest Regional at High Point Athletic Complex and the Class 1-A Midwest Regional on Saturday at North Stokes.
Athletes will be aiming for spots in the state meets May 16-17 in Greensboro.
Here’s a look at some highlights from last week’s conference championships:
Piedmont Athletic Conference
Randleman captured the team championships for boys and girls, with host Wheatmore the boys’ runner-up and Providence Grove second in the girls’ standings.
For boys, Chase Farlow of Randleman won four events. Those came in the 200 meters (23.73), high jump (6 feet, 10 inches – for a 1-foot margin), long jump (21-7) and triple jump (43-2).
Randleman’s other winners were Bryson Nall (400, 52.62 and 800, 2:17.42), Triston Chriscoe (110 hurdles, 15.53), Jay Richards (pole vault, 13-0) and Ty Moton (shot put, 44-½).
Wheatmore’s Ayden Fitzgerald was first in the 1,600 (4:59.41) and 3,200 (11:37.86) and teammate Dakota Ludwick won the 100 (11.74).
Providence Grove had a champion with Malachi Combo in the 300 hurdles (42.04). Southwestern Randolph’s Owen Whelan was tops in the discus (122-2).
Four schools won in relays – Trinity in the 3,200 (9:12.62), Providence Grove in the 800 (1:38.74), Eastern Randolph in the 400 (46.49) and Wheatmore in the 1,600 (3:51.20).
** On the girls’ side, Randleman’s Gracie Beane won the 200 (28.04), high jump (5-4) and triple jump (34-2) and teammate Jacquline McDaniel claimed the (100, 13.35) and long jump (16-0) to lead the team’s points producers.
McDaniel was the high jump runner-up and Beane was second in the long jump.
Providence Grove’s Laurel Bernhardt was a three-event individual winner — 1,600 in 5:41.49, 800 in 2:32.92 and 3,200 in 13:53.84. Teammate Lyndsay Browder had the best time in the 300 hurdles (51.64).
Eastern Randolph’s Mirianna Corea swept the throws, capturing the discus (125-9) and shot put (34-9).
Other winners were Trinity’s Kayla Franklin (400, 1:04.55) and Wheatmore’s Kahmarii McNeill (100 hurdles, 19.06).
The relay winners were Wheatmore (3,200 in 11:48.77), Trinity (800 in 1:59.15), Randleman (400 in 55.07) and Providence Grove (1,600 in 4:58.41).
Mid-Piedmont Conference
Asheboro placed second in both boys’ and girls’ team standings behind Oak Grove in the meet at Montgomery Central.
The boys’ 100 winner was Asheboro’s Elijah Woodle in 11.17 seconds, edging teammate Jalial Timmons (11.41).
Timmons claimed the 200 in 22.94, while Woodle was fourth (23.64).
Woodle was the high jump champion at 6-3.
Aaron Tyson captured the triple jump at 43-5 after placing second in the long jump (20-10¾).
The Blue Comets won both throwing events, with Jorge Caceres Dominguez in the shot put at 44-1 and Juan Pablo Munoz in the discus at 141-1. Teammate Boone Hinesley was second in both events.
The Blue Comets also won the boys’ 400 relay in 43.04.
** For the girls, Asheboro’s Jalaya Showers won the 200 in 25.90 seconds and teammate Nyla Price was the 100 hurdles champion in 17.93 seconds.
Showers also claimed the long jump at 17-2.
The high jump title went to Rebecca Wilson of Asheboro with a leap of 4-9.
