Trinity heavyweight hits milestone after alarming start to match
Joseph Trahan (Bob Sutton / Randolph Record)
TRINITY — Winning a milestone match came with a message for Trinity senior Joseph Trahan.
He had to scramble off his back in last week’s dual meet at Wheatmore to capture his 150th career victory.
“Real humbling, honestly,” Trahan said. “I was getting a big head and stuff.”
Trajan recorded a pin to improve his record to 30-0 this season, but he wasn’t much consumed with his record afterward.
That’s because Wheatmore’s Maddox Russo threw Trahan to his back for the first points in the opening period in the heavyweight bout. From there, Russo earned near-fall points close to the edge of the mat.
That was enough for a 7-0 lead. Russo appeared to have Trahan in trouble again after a restart, but Trahan scored a reversal that led to a pin.
“Got humbled real fast,” Trahan said. “It kind of sunk in that I got to stop messing around with people and stop getting a big head. … You need to lock in and stop playing around with people.”
Trahan, who weighed in at 263 pounds, said when he does “funky stuff” it can lead to trouble. He said he hadn’t been on his back in such a bad situation last since February’s state tournament – not even during a bevy of offseason wrestling.
Trahan has been a pinning machine, with only one match lasting a full six minutes.
Trinity claimed a 58-22 victory in the Central 3-A Conference meet.
Trinity’s Aiden Burkholder, Steven Cross and Edgar Vasquez all had early pins, while Haris Idrees, Grayson Carroll and Jeven Palmeri added later pins to go with Addam Bernal’s 15-1 decision and a couple of forfeits for the Bulldogs.
Ayden Sumners produced a technical fall and Chris Scott won by pin for Wheatmore’s lone victories other than a pair of forfeits.
