Asheboro, Southwestern Randolph teams win soccer regionals, head to state finals

ASHEBORO – The boys’ soccer teams from Asheboro and Southwestern Randolph will play for state championships

Southwestern Randolph (27-2) will take on Clinton (27-2) for the Class 2A title at 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams were top seeded in their respective regions.

Asheboro (27-2) will be in the Class 3A final against Western Alamance (24-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday. It’s a rematch from the regular season.

The title games will be held at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews. The venue is being used for boys’ soccer finals for the first time after serving as the championship site for girls’ soccer last spring.

The schools from Randolph County will be in their first boys’ soccer state championship games.

As No. 1 seeds in the West Region, Asheboro and Southwestern Randolph were home throughout regional play.

Asheboro defeated second-seeded Winston-Salem Reynolds 4-2 as Cam Letterlough racked up three goals and one assist in Tuesday night’s regional final. Diego Bustamante had one goal and one assist.

Meanwhile, Western Alamance, the No. 2 seed in the East Region, topped fifth-seeded Southern Durham 3-1 in the regional final. Two of the Warriors’ goals in that game came on penalty kicks.

Asheboro defeated visiting Western Alamance 4-3 in August in a non-conference game. Since then, the Warriors went on a 23-game winning streak.

In the Class 2A West Region final, Southwestern Randolph topped No. 14 seed Lincolnton 3-0 with Yael Ortiz, Aaron Avina and Fernando Hernandez scoring goals Tuesday night. Avina also provided an assist.

Clinton defeated third-seeded Greene Central 2-0 in the East Region final.

Schedule changes

With the soccer teams still playing, Asheboro and Southwestern Randolph have rescheduled their non-conference basketball games against each other that were to be played Friday night.

Instead, those have been moved to Monday night at Southwestern Randolph.

Also, Asheboro has basketball changes related to Randleman. On Tuesday, only the girls will play at Randleman.

Then Dec. 10, the boys’ teams will meet at Asheboro.

Also, Southwestern Randolph’s home wrestling meet against Providence Grove was moved from Monday to Tuesday night.
