Eastern Randolph’s Corea tosses shot put for state title

GREENSBORO – Eastern Randolph’s Mirianna Corea has added another event to her portfolio of state championships in track and field. The junior thrower captured the shot put in the Class 1A state meet Friday at North Carolina A&T. Corea’s throw of 38 feet, 6 inches was the top mark, putting her ahead of Albemarle’s Jasmine Brown (37-9). Corea, the 2024 state champion in the discus, was the runner-up in that event this time. Randolph County will have entrants in three classifications in the high school track and field state championships. Led by a strong effort by Randleman in Class 2A regionals, there will be some high seeds for the meets at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro. The Class 1A and Class 3A state meets are set for Friday. The Class 2A and Class 4-A state competitions will be held Saturday. Uwharrie Charter Academy will send 13 wrestlers to the state tournament after an impressive run through the Class 1A East Regional on Saturday at Rosewood in Goldsboro. UCA’s regional champions were Ayven Virasone Chitavong (106 pounds), Brandon Jordan (144), Lorenzo Alston (157), Aiden Foster (165) and Michael Shropshire (215). The Eagles won another regional team crown. Alston, a junior who had two earlier technical falls and received a forfeit, is undefeated and will be aiming for this third state championship. MATTHEWS – Asheboro’s boys’ soccer team had done so much work throughout the season and during the last game of the year that the biggest reward seemed so close. But Blue Comets couldn’t complete the assignment in the Class 3A state championship game, falling to Western Alamance 4-3 in overtime Saturday night at Mecklenburg County Sportsplex. Asheboro, boys’ soccer Bustamante regularly contributes to the Blue Comets’ big offensive numbers. He’s a senior for the top-seeded team in the West Region for the Class 3A state playoffs. At the beginning of this week, Bustamante ranked second on the Asheboro team in goals with 29 and in assists with 28. He had two in each of those categories when the state playoffs began Saturday and the Blue Comets trounced visiting West Charlotte 9-0.
