Asheboro to fill city council vacancy
ASHEBORO — There’s a vacancy on the Asheboro City Council, with the deadline to apply for a position on the board approaching in early January.
The position will be appointed by the city council.
The vacancy came when Joey Trogdon, who had been on the council, was elected as mayor in November. He was swore in earlier this month.
It was clear that the council would have an opening because Trogdon ran against Eddie Burks, also a councilman, for the mayor’s position. The council terms for Trogdon and Burks weren’t expiring.
Burks remains on the council. There are seven positions on the council plus mayor.
Applications for the open council position will be accepted through 5 p.m. Jan. 9 at the city clerk’s office at City Hall on North Church Street. The application must be signed. Applications can be emailed to [email protected]
To qualify for a spot on the council, the person must be a qualified voter, resident of the Asheboro corporate limits, and at least 21 years old.
The city released information regarding the candidates, pointing out that information about candidates becomes a matter of public record. So information submitted will be available to the public for inspection.
The city council already has three new members with Phillip Cheek, Mary Joan Pugh and Phil Skeen joining the board based on this fall’s election.
