Whelan became the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion in the boys’ discus last week in the league championship meet at Wheatmore.
The senior had a winning toss of 122 feet, 2 inches, edging defending champion Ty Moton of Randleman. Owen improved his throw by more than 35 from the previous year.
Owen also placed third in the shot put at 40-6¾.
Whelan has been an All-PAC football player for the past two years. He’s committed to play football at Guilford College.
