Headen takes charge of Asheboro girls’ basketball program

ASHEBORO – Mike Headen has never been a head coach of a high school program, but taking that role with the Asheboro girls’ basketball team seems natural. “It’s a new experience, but I think it’s a good thing,” Headen said. Headen is moving up from assistant coach to replace Don Corry, who has stepped aside after two seasons in his second go-around in charge of the team. “We felt like we had the best guy right here in front of us to be our girls’ basketball coach,” athletics director Wes Berrier said. “He has a lot of passion for the…

Randolph County deputy on SWAT team conquers test

Sheriff’s department member reaches rare fitness territory ASHEBORO — When Luke Wible saw the list of physical tests from the National Tactical Officers Association, he noted the value for a SWAT team member. That might have been just part of what led the Randolph County Sheriff’s deputy to achieve a rare score on the test. “I’m a newer guy, but I could see how those things you do in the test could translate when you’re on duty in a real situation,” he said. Wible, a patrol deputy, basically aced the Physical Fitness Qualification Challenge. “He’s such a motivator,” Lt. Eric…

There’s still hope for Asheboro ZooKeepers despite tough times

Andrew Grande hopes his time with the Asheboro ZooKeepers leads to other opportunities. (PJ Ward-Brown/Randolph Record)   Injury stalls plans for ‘free agent’ in search of new team ASHEBORO — No baseball team in the Coastal Plain League is probably ready for the season’s second half more than the Asheboro ZooKeepers. The ZooKeepers were forced on the road and into several situations necessitating make-up games because of delayed renovations at McCrary Park. Then there’s…

Superintendent Gainey proud of how RCSS pulled together

ASHEBORO — Superintendent Stephen Gainey of the Randolph County School System said it was a satisfying school year in many respects for his district. “We stayed open,” he said earlier this month. “Just about back to normal as far as what we knew.” RCSS was among the most aggressive districts in the state in the 2020-21 school year in terms of moving toward in-person instruction. That approach remained in place for 2021-22. Gainey said there was across-the-board support for RCSS and its determination to run operations in a manner that made students and staff comfortable and engaged.  “We navigated it…
