Black returns to Asheboro volleyball team

ASHEBORO – It turns out Kim Black was pulled back to Asheboro High School volleyball after all. She’ll be in her third stint as coach of the program, where she won a state championship, when the season begins in the late summer. “I can’t make any promises except to promise to do my best,” Black said. She’s the all-time winningest coach at Asheboro, holding a 246-97 record as a varsity coach. She directed the Blue Comets to three state finals, including the Class 3-A title in 1994, and eight conference crowns. Black has made the rounds among schools in Randolph…

Randolph County’s deer harvest rates top in state

Deer hunting took place in Randolph County like in no other county in North Carolina. Again. With numbers tallied for the 2021-22 season through the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s electronic reporting system, it showed that 4,422 white-tailed deer had been successfully hunted in Randolph County. That was the most for any county in the state. “There’s a lot of people in Randolph County who hunt,” said Michael King of the NCWRC. “By and large, those out of that group (responsible for the county’s deer hunting total) are from Randolph County or local to that area.” Anson County was second…

Greenwood set for concert in Liberty

LIBERTY – With Lee Greenwood’s appearance on the schedule for this weekend, Liberty Showcase Theater has drawn some attention. Yet in many ways, that’s nothing new for the entertainment venue. “We have a lot of country artists from the ‘70s to the ‘90s,” said Spring Gates, general manager of Brown Entertainment. “We also do have some of the top bluegrass artists.” Brown Entertainment is the company that manages the theater. Greenwood is a country music singer and songwriter, and a Grammy Award winner. For the Liberty Showcase Theater, Greenwood’s appearance shapes up as a good one, but it’s not atypical,…

Area wrestlers stick with it for solid finishes

Uwharrie Charter Academy’s Doug Bowles lifts Mount Airy’s Connor Medvar in the air during the 170-pound bout in the Class 1-A finals Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum. PJ WARD-BROWN/NORTH STATE JOURNAL GREENSBORO – It was an encouraging start to the state tournament for Randolph County wrestlers Thursday. And not a bad finish either by Saturday. Aside from state champions David Makupson (138 pounds, Class 2-A) of Trinity and Aldo Hernandez (132, Class 1-A) and Grayson Roberts (160 pounds, Class 2-A), there were solid performances that lasted all the way to their final matches. Randolph County wrestlers excelled in the first…

Winning it all motivates state champs Makupson, Roberts, Hernandez

Trinity’s David Makupson, top, controls Will Nix of Bandys in the Class 2-A 138-pound final Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum. GREENSBORO – Contending for state championships in years past was part of the motivation for Trinity’s David Makupson and Uwharrie Charter Academy’s Grayson Roberts. Experiencing the winning feeling again was part of the quest for UCA’s Aldo Hernandez. All three wrestlers ended up as titlists Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum. Makupson, a senior, put together a dominating four-match run through the 138-pound division in Class 2-A, winning the states after fourth-place finishes in each of the past two years. “Fourth…

Trindale teacher tabbed for Presidential Award

ARCHDALE – Trindale Elementary School teacher Sarah Remery is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The fourth-grade teacher’s specialty has been math, and it was under that category that she was selected for this national distinction. “Math can be a very scary thing,” Remery said. “I try to tell my students, ‘This is the year you’re going to be a math student.’” Dr. Ana Floyd, the K-6 lead teacher for math and science in the Randolph County School System, recommended Remery for the Presidential Award. “Her lessons are well planned and highly engaging…

Asheboro’s Santos finds wrestling niche, wins regional

GIBSONVILLE – Xavier Santos was relatively late to find wrestling as a preferred sport. But he’s finding it to be a good time. The Asheboro junior secured a regional championship at 113 pounds Saturday, and he’ll lead a contingent of Blue Comets to the Class 3-A state tournament. Santos won all three bouts in the two-day Midwest Regional at Eastern Guilford. The last of those was a pin in 1:12 of the regional final against Oak Grove’s John Courson. The Blue Comets will send five wrestlers to states this week at the Greensboro Coliseum, with twin brothers Luke Lambeth (160…

Providence Grove boys grow into championship unit

Zander Cheek of Providence Grove goes to the basket during a PAC game earlier this month at Trinity. CLIMAX – As the season approached, Providence Grove boys’ basketball coach Wes Luther wasn’t sure if his team was of championship caliber. “On Nov. 1, we would have been happy with a top-three finish,” Luther said of the Piedmont Athletic Conference. The Patriots sure were happy Thursday night, but it was because of an historic reason. They’re conference champions. It’s the school’s first outright league title in boys’ basketball, secured with a 63-49 victory against visiting Wheatmore. “It’s such a great feeling…

RCSS might turn to remote learning in some situations

ASHEBORO – The Randolph County School System is on the verge of implementing a new plan for days when inclement weather prevents in-school instruction. With classes already called off numerous times this winter because of weather-related issues, RCSS Superintendent Dr. Stephen Gainey outlined a plan for future instruction, which might involve situations of remote learning. “I just wanted everyone to know that staff members at each school are making plans to provide remote instruction should we need to employ that strategy,” Gainey said. The initial message on the topic came in a Jan. 28 announcement. At the time, the school…
