(PJ Ward-Brown / Randolph Record) GREENSBORO — There were nine individual wrestling state champions from schools in Randolph County schools during the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state tournament, which ended Monday at First Horizon Coliseum. Those titlists represented five different schools — Eastern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy in Class 1A and Randleman, Trinity and Wheatmore in Class 2A. Uwharrie Charter Academy, girls’ basketball Gudino has been a key part of UCA’s strong season, particularly with the late-season stretch that has come with several accomplishments for the Eagles. Gudino, who’s one of two seniors on the team, was injured when the season began. Her return to action has added to the team’s success. UCA girls halt Southwestern Randolph’s unbeaten string, win PAC Tournament

ASHEBORO – An undefeated record for Southwestern Randolph’s girls’ basketball team was dashed in the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. Uwharrie Charter Academy churned out a 49-43 victory Friday night. It’s the first conference tournament championship for the Eagles, who held the No. 3 seed and avenged to regular-season losses. Navaeh Staples poured in 19 points, Naimah Al-Arif provided 10 points and Lainey Thomas had eight points for visiting UCA (22-7). Asheboro man sentenced in ammunition possession case

WINSTON-SALEM — An Asheboro man was sentenced last week to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to a firearm charge. Musin Shaborr Roberts, 22, was sentenced to 108 months in prison plus three years supervised probation based on information from Randall Galyon, acting U.S. attorney of the Middle District of North Carolina. According to court records, on June 30, 2023, an officer with the Greensboro Police Department saw people standing around a car in the parking lot of a Greensboro Housing Authority property. Randleman, basketball / football / track and field Moton has been part of some high-level competitions recently as he’s a key athlete for multiple Randleman teams. In last week’s Class 1A/2A state indoor track and field championships, Moton placed 14th in the shot put at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. Moton recorded a toss of 41 feet, 1½ inches. Moton had an 11th-place finish in the discus in the Class 2A outdoor state meet last spring. Randleman’s Farlow leaps to state title in indoor high jump

WINSTON-SALEM – Chase Farlow of Randleman notched a second individual state championship, this time in indoor track and field. Farlow, a senior, won the high jump in Friday’s Class 1A/2A state meet Friday at JDL Fast Track. Farlow cleared 6 feet, 10 inches to match the Class 1A/2A state meet record set by Tanner Anderson of East Burke in 2010. Farlow won the competition by a sizable margin, with Greene Central’s Deitrich Williams second at 6-4. This follows last May’s outdoor state championship in the high jump. Uwharrie Charter Academy, swimming Becker, a Uwharrie Charter Academy junior, had the top finishes among entrants from schools in Randolph County in the swimming and diving state championships. Becker was the runner-up in two events in the Class 1A/2A competition Saturday at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. Becker’s times in the 50-yard freestyle (23.83) and 100 freestyle (51.03) were both less than 0.50 seconds out of first place. RANDLEMAN – Randleman’s boys’ basketball team rose to the top among a crowd of contenders in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. The Tigers clinched the regular-season title last week with a pair of victories. Randleman won last week’s showdown at Uwharrie Charter Academy by 77-66 with Tyshaun Goldston’s 23 points and Chase Farlow’s 18 points leading the way.
