ASHEBORO — A 24-year veteran of the Asheboro Fire Department died Saturday after suffering from COVID-19 and associated lung damage. Battalion Chief Chris Hoover, 47, had been at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill since November 24, 2021. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Battalion Chief Chris Hoover after a hard-fought battle with COVID-19. Copperheads announce name change to ZooKeepers

ASHEBORO — The Asheboro Copperheads announced this morning that they will change their name to the Asheboro ZooKeepers. At a press conference at the Asheboro Recreation Center Gymnasium, the team, which was founded in 1999, blasted Guns 'N Roses's "Welcome to the Jungle" as they unveiled logos and uniforms for the team. The team's colors will change to a safari-theme with tan and brown dominating the logo and uniforms. Gone will be the burnt orange and black of the Copperheads. RANDLEMAN — One person is dead after a shooting at a part in Randleman on Saturday night. Just before midnight on Saturday night, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting at a residence on Leonae Drive in Randleman. The victim, Daniel Lopez Vences, 20, had been transported in a private vehicle to Randolph Hospital prior to the arrival of law enforcement. The alleged shooter had also fled the scene. ASHEBORO — After strong winds, snow and power outages caused school cancellations across Randolph County on Monday, the first school of of the new year, the second school day of 2022 will also start with a delay. Randolph County Schools and Asheboro City Schools will both operate on a three-hour delay Tuesday.
