Prep basketball: PAC play begins with tight girls’ games

Teams began play Friday night in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and there were a couple of close games in girls’ basketball. Defending champion Randleman received 21 points and 10 rebounds from Audra Petty in a 47-41 home victory against Wheatmore. Providence Grove edged visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 59-53 with Brooke Ingram racking up 25 points. Southwestern Randolph had an easy time with visiting Trinity in a 55-4 result. Eastern Randolph is slated to begin PAC play this week. Earlier last week, Jordin George scored 21 points when Southwestern Randolph trounced visiting North Davidson 55-28 in non-conference action. Southwestern Randolph, boys’ basketball It has been a challenging start to the season for Southwestern Randolph, but Robertson has given the Cougars chances in games. Last week, the senior had games of 24 points and 19 points. Still, the Cougars absorbed a pair of narrow home losses on consecutive nights to South Davidson (by 42-40) and East Davidson (by 55-52). Robertson is coming off football season when he was a receiver for the Cougars.

Here's a look at some of last week's area high school sports highlights: The Asheboro boys’ basketball team avenged a loss to Randleman by securing a 58-36 home victory with Jerquarius Stanback posting 18 points. Stanback had 18 again when the Blue Comets defeated visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 70-33 later in the week. ** Dominic Payne’s 32 points boosted Trinity past East Davidson 73-56. Randleman, girls’ basketball Petty is one of the returning players for the Tigers, who had a strong senior class last season. She has been up the task. Petty, a senior guard, posted 24 points against Asheboro and 27 points against Ledford in a pair of games last week. In Randleman’s first three games, Petty has averaged 26.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. She also was credited with 2.7 steals per game. Freshman Summer Bowman was part of one of the best seasons in Appalachian State women’s soccer history. Bowman, a former Wheatmore player, compiled four goals and three assists. She was second on the team in goals and her 11 points ranked third on the team. Bowman, a forward, appeared in 15 games, starting nine of those. The Mountaineers placed third in the Sun Belt regular season for its best winning percentage in conference play with a 6-2-2 mark.
