Participants and fans were decked out in pink for the matches.

Providence Grove | girls’ golf Wright secured Player of the Year honors in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. She was the season-long champion in the conference. In last week’s final PAC match, Providence Grove emerged as the team champion with a 35-shot edge on runner-up Eastern Randolph at Siler City Country Club. Trinity was the third-place team, followed by Randleman and Wheatmore. Wright will be among the entrants in next week’s Class 1-A/2-A Central Regional at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe.

Wheatmore’s lone conference defeat came by 5-4 at Southwestern Randolph. The Warriors avenged that loss a few weeks later with a 6-3 victory. Boys’ soccer Wheatmore remained undefeated through last week, but nothing much has been solved between the Warriors and rival Trinity. Those teams tied for the second time this year. Randleman’s defense limited the often-potent Providence Grove offense to 180 yards. Randleman never trailed, going up in the first quarter on Christian McLeod’s 26-yard field goal. Uwharrie Charter Academy | volleyball Lowery played a role as the Eagles won two matches last week to stay in contention for the top spot in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Lowery had 16 kills, and five blocks as UCA topped visiting Providence Grove 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 13-25, 15-9. That was followed by UCA’s 24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 victory at Trinity when Lowery provided 11 kills and five blocks. Entering this month with two weeks in the regular season remaining, UCA held an 11-3 overall record and 6-2 PAC mark.

RANDLEMAN – Randleman served up a three-set sweep of Southwestern Randolph last week to hand the Cougars their first loss in Piedmont Athletic Conference volleyball. The Tigers used 17 digs and six kills from Haley Hinshaw, 23 assists and 14 digs from Kenzie Roach and 13 digs and 11 kills from Chloe Dixon. Karli Kennington supplied 29 digs. Former Asheboro standout Coe released from CFL team

Former Asheboro High School standout athlete Nick Coe was released from the roster of a Canadian Football League team. The Edmonton Elks released Coe, a 25-year-old defensive lineman, on Sept. 13. He had played in two games this season for the Elks. After playing for Asheboro during high school, Coe went on to a college career with Auburn before he was undrafted. The Elks made the move to release Coe when they signed receiver Lucky Johnson. The two previous years, Coe spent time on reserve units or practice squads with the NFL’s New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.
