The state tournament for high school wrestling was pushed back two days because of weather-related concerns, so now it will be contested Saturday, Sunday and Monday at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced the changes Tuesday. With mid-week wintry weather anticipated across much of the state, NCHSAA officials consulted with coliseum officials and other necessary parties to make the schedule change.
The three-day tournament was scheduled to begin Thursday.
Within the tournament, there have been adjustments to the schedule as well.
For instance, first-round consolations matches for Class 2A, 3A, 4A and girls will be held on the same day as the opening round. Those are slated to begin around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Class 1A, which includes Uwharrie Charter Academy and Eastern Randolph, will stay in a two-day format. Wrestlers in that class compete Sunday and Monday.
Sunday’s competition will begin at 1:30 p.m. with quarterfinals. After a round of consolations, semifinals are listed to start at 6 p.m. Sunday.
The finals are slated following the Parade of Champions at 4 p.m. Monday.
There’s a total of 44 wrestlers from schools in Randolph County who’ve qualified for the states.
Also, the NCHSAA announced that seeding and bracket unveiling for the basketball state tournaments will take place Sunday rather than Saturday. That allows an additional day for teams to complete conference tournaments.
