Prep girls: Cougars top UCA to start conference play; Randleman wins three times

Behind Jordin George’s 18 points and Maddie Strider’s 16 points, Southwestern Randolph picked up a 60-53 home victory against Uwharrie Charter Academy in a Four Rivers Conference girls’ basketball opener Friday night.
The Cougars, who led 31-13 at halftime, improved to 11-2 overall with their third consecutive triumph.
Nevaeh Staples had 14 points for UCA.
Earlier in the week, Southwestern Randolph smacked visiting Chatham Charter 56-25 with George racking up 21 points.
Also, UCA suffered a 36-31 loss at Eastern Guilford.
** Randleman won twice in Piedmont Athletic Conference play.
The Tigers handled visiting Montgomery Central 63-37 and won 37-22 at Central Davidson.
Randleman also won out of conference last week, defeating host Eastern Randolph 50-35.
Bella Byman provided 20 points and Lanie Hall had 13 points for the Tigers, who responded from a 19-15 halftime deficit.
“We’ve got to come out with more energy,” Randleman coach Brandon Varner said.
Eastern Randolph’s Callie Craven scored 13.
** Providence Grove topped visiting Trinity 48-30 in the Central Carolina 3-A Conference. Trinity also lost to host East Davidson by 46-39.
West Davidson claimed a 45-41 victory against host Providence Grove.
** Also in the Central 3-A Conference, Wheatmore rolled 50-26 at East Davidson after pinning a 52-5 loss on host Thomasville.
** Asheboro fell 73-58 at home to Northern Guilford on Friday night following a 49-46 loss at Southeast Guilford earlier in the week.
