Asheboro and Southwestern Randolph hold No. 1 seeds for the West Region in the boys’ soccer state playoffs, which begin this weekend.
Asheboro is atop the bracket in Class 3A. Southwestern Randolph is in the same spot for Class 2A. Both teams will play every game at home through the regional final if they advance.
First-round games will be held Saturday, with the second round Tuesday.
West Charlotte is the opening opponent for Asheboro (22-2), which won the Mid-Piedmont Conference.
No. 12 seed Ledford (12-7-4) and No. 21 seed Montgomery Central (9-9) are the only other teams from the league in the playoffs and they meet each other in the first round.
Southwestern Randolph and Randleman were co-champions in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and are in the Class 2A field.
Southwestern Randolph (20-2) takes on No. 32 seed East Rutherford (7-13-1) on Saturday. A victory for the Cougars could result in a matchup with PAC member Trinity (14-5-3), which is seeded No. 16 and has a home date with No. 17 seed Surry Central (13-7).
Randleman (15-7-2), which has a 10-game winning streak, holds the No. 13 seed with a home assignment with No. 20 seed Community School of Davidson (8-8-2).
Providence Grove (11-12-1) slid into the tournament field at No. 31, meaning a trip to second-seeded Brevard (17-3-2).
From the PAC, only Wheatmore (3-18-1), a Class 2A team, didn’t make the playoffs. Both of the league’s Class 1A teams are still playing.
In Class 1A, Uwharrie Charter Academy (7-10) is seeded No. 24 with a first-round date at ninth-seeded Highlands (11-6-2).
The No. 31 seed is Eastern Randolph (6-15), which goes to Charlotte to face Bradford Prep (16-3).
