Seabolt to face challengers in Randolph County’s sheriff’s race; Filing deadline comes for lots of positions
Greg Seabolt, sheriff of Randolph County, will receive challenges as he bids to remain in office.
Three other Republicans have filed for the position. They are Brian Arrington of Climax, Eric Hicks of Trinity and Chris Toriello of Asheboro. There will be a Republican primary March 3 prior to November’s election.
Seabolt, who’s from Denton, was first elected as sheriff in 2018 and won reelection in 2022.
Arrington had been a captain in the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office prior this retirement earlier this year. He spent 27½ years in the department.
Hicks previously ran for sheriff as a Libertarian candidate.
Toriello, who goes by the nickname “Taco,” has a résumé that touts 32 years in law enforcement.
The filing period ended Friday.
Board of Commissioners chairman Darrell Frye, a Republican from Archdale, will be opposed by Robin Stevens of Trinity in District 2.
In District 3, incumbent commissioner David Allen of Liberty will be opposed by fellow Republican Carrie Guess-Slatosky of Randleman.
Duffy Johnson, an Asheboro Republican, is unopposed in District 4.
Others filing for ballot spots for countywide positions are Republican Pam Hill of Asheboro for Randolph County Clerk of Superior Court and Republican Krista Lowe of Randleman for Register of Deeds.
Numerous positions in the state house involve districts that include parts of Randolph County.
For the state Senate District 25, Republican Amy Galey of Burlington is seeking to keep the seat. Democrat Southey Blanton of Burlington also filed.
In District 29, incumbent Republican David Craven Jr. of Asheboro will be opposed by Democrat Bob Morrison of Asheboro.
In the state House of Representatives, Democrat Robert Reives II of Goldston aims to remain in the District 54 seat.
For District 70, Trinity’s Brian Biggs, a Republican incumbent, will be opposed by William McCaskill, a Democrat from Asheboro.
For District 78, Republican incumbent Neal Jackson will be opposed by Democrat Matt Borja.
Several candidates for judgeships are connected to Randolph County.
In District 37, Republicans Jimmy Hill and Sarah Neely Lanier are vying for Seat 1. They’re both from Asheboro.
For Seat 3, Republican Darren Allen of Asheboro is the lone candidate. For Seat 4, the candidates are Allison Layton of Archdale, Jodi Allred of Asheboro, Geoffrey Crawford of Asheboro and Chelsie Embler of Asheboro.
School board candidates
Three incumbents are seeking to remain on the Randolph County School System’s Board of Education.
Shannon Whitaker of Franklinville, Fred Burgess of Climax and Phillip Lanier of Asheboro filed to retain seats.
Challengers are Hollie Smith of Pleasant Garden, Eric Welch of Thomasville and Ernie Thalasinos of Trinity.
For the Asheboro City Schools Board of Education, the candidates are Brad Thomas and Mike Brown for two seats for terms that will last four years. They’re both listed as Republicans as the party affiliations will be listed for the first time for the board.
