Wheatmore alum Garrison scores first collegiate soccer goals

BOONE – Wheatmore alum Ellie Garrison scored her first two collegiate goals as Appalachian State defeated visiting Longwood 2-0 last Thursday night in women's soccer. Garrison, a freshman, posted both goals late in the first half. The result gave the Mountaineers a 2-0-2 record. Garrison is the state’s all-time leader in goals for high school girls’ soccer.

Asheboro’s Stanback to miss N.C. East-West All-Star Game

ASHEBORO – Jerquarius Stanback of Asheboro won’t play in next week’s North Carolina East-West All-Star Game because of an injury stemming from late in the basketball season. Stanback, an Appalachian State signee, is dealing with a wrist injury that might require surgery, Asheboro coach Brian Nance said. “He fell in that playoff game and just landed on it,” Nance said. “There’s something in the wrist.” Stanback was injured in a violent tumble during a first-round game of the Class 3A state playoffs vs. visiting Carson. He suffered a concussion and other ailments and missed Asheboro’s second-round loss to Asheville Reynolds.…

Uwharrie Charter Academy, softball Bulla has been a standout at the plate and from the pitching circle during her senior season for the Eagles. Bulla entered this week with a .391 batting average. Her six home runs and 10 doubles were team-high marks after also leading UCA in those categories last year. As a pitcher, Bulla has averaged nearly two strikeouts per inning this season. Last week, UCA won first- and second-round games – against Mitchell and Swain County – in the Class 1-A state playoffs, giving them 19 victories this season. College notes: Coleman leads ACC in softball batting; Oakley wins two bouts in NCAAs

Alex Coleman (Courtesy photo) Southwestern Randolph alum Alex Coleman, an outfielder for North Carolina’s softball team, is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading batter more than halfway through the season. Coleman checked at .495 entering this week. Her numbers reflect a conference-leading 53 hits in 107 official at-bats with three doubles. The Tar Heels leadoff batter also has drawn 14 walks with only eight strikeouts. Behind Coleman in batting average is Florida State’s Jaysoni Beachum at .470. Coleman’s 37 runs scored rate second in the ACC. She’s also 20-for-21 on stolen-base attempts to rank tied for second…
