ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sean Adkins

Southwestern Randolph  |  Boys’ Basketball  |  Junior Adkins poured in 20 points as the Cougars secured a 61-48 non-conference victory last week at Chatham Central. It’s a huge point total for the junior considering Southwestern Randolph has struggled at times on the offensive end. Coupled with the previous Friday’s road victory at Randleman (when Adkins had 12 points), that’s back-to-back wins for the Cougars, who improved to 5-4 overall. The result against Chatham Central marked only the third time this season that the Cougars reached the 60-point mark.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Gracyn Hall

Gracyn Hall | Randleman | Girls Basketball Hall was the leading scorer in two of the Tigers’ three games last week. She averaged 19.3 points in those games as Randleman improved its record to 5-0. Last week’s victories included two on the road. They won 51-42 at Oak Grove, defeated visiting Ledford 56-35 and then captured their Piedmont Athletic Conference opener by 61-52 at Wheatmore. Athlete of the Week: Arhman Tyson

ARHMAN TYSON Asheboro | Wrestling | Senior Tyson won six matches during the week, one of several Blue Comets to sweep their bouts. Tyson, a senior, completes in the heavyweight division. He posted victories in matchups with Ragsdale and East Chapel Hill as part of a tri-meet with the Asheboro team winning in each case as well. Then in Saturday’s Forbush Falcon Duals, Tyson won four more times as Asheboro posted a 2-2 record in the event. Athlete of the Week: Elias Alston

ELIAS ALSTON Eastern Randolph | Football | Senior Alston turned in yet another big game for the Wildcats, this time scoring four touchdowns in the team’s second-round game in the Class 1-A state playoffs. Alston scored on a pair of receptions as part of his 159-yard receiving out. He also returned a punt for a touchdown. Alston is a senior receiver who also plays as a defensive back.

GABI GREENE Uwharrie Charter Academy | Senior | Volleyball The senior outside hitter was a key contributor as the Eagles won all four of their matches. The first three triumphs came on consecutive days in the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament as UCA was a surprise winner. Then came the opening round of the Class 1-A state playoffs against Andrews. Greene was charted for a total of 51 kills, 41 digs, 11 aces, seven blocks and strong serve receiving in those matches.

Athlete of the Week: Gracey Menscer

GRACEY MENSCER Providence Grove High School | Junior | Volleyball Gracey Menscer turned in almost identical outings as the Providence Grove Patriots won twice last week in four sets. Menscer was charted with 48 assists in a victory against Eastern Randolph. Two nights later, Menscer ended up with 48 assists and 12 digs as the Patriots topped Wheatmore. Those outcomes gave Providence Grove a four-match winning streak and a 12-9 overall record heading into this week’s Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament.
