Randleman, softball ‌Ivey has made quite an impression as a pitcher and batter in the opening weeks of her freshman season for Randleman. The left-handed pitcher rolled up four victories in her first five decisions. She recorded 39 strikeouts in 31 innings. She also has come through with key hits for the Tigers, who won seven of their first eight games. Ivey posted two of the team’s first three home runs this season.

Asheboro, baseball Adams has been a boost for the Blue Comets in several roles on the baseball team. He has been a pitcher and outfielder. When the Blue Comets defeated host Southwestern Randolph 3-2 last week, Adams started the game on the mound and later returned to the rubber to notch the final out. He was summoned in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and posted a strikeout to end the game. He recorded a total of nine strikeouts. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Parker Kines

Wheatmore, baseball ‌Kines, a junior left-hander, has been a key pitcher for the Warriors, who won three of their first five games. The Warriors opened Piedmont Athletic Conference play last week by defeating rival Trinity twice. Kines was the starting pitcher for the league opener. During the previous week, Kines struck out 10 Asheboro batters in four innings of Wheatmore’s season-opening victory. Kines is fresh off the basketball season when he led the Warriors in scoring.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Julian Brooks

Eastern Randolph, boys’ basketball Brooks has been a key contributor for the Wildcats, who advance to this week’s third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs. The junior forward rates third in scoring (8.8 points per game) for an Eastern Randolph team that has made playoff runs in consecutive seasons. He’s the leading rebounder for the Wildcats with nearly eight boards per game. Eastern Randolph has reached at least the 18-win mark in back-to-back seasons after going six straight seasons with losing records. Brooks also has been a member of Eastern Randolph’s Piedmont Athletic Conference championship football team.

Trinity, boys’ basketball Payne keeps pouring in big point totals and he moved to No. 2 all-time in Trinity’s boys’ basketball history last week. The senior guard has compiled more than 2,200 points in his career. He passed Josh Pittman (2,187 points) in a Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal last week against Eastern Randolph. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Levi Dennis

Trinity, wrestling Dennis is wrapping up another stellar season for the Bulldogs. He won four matches last week to win the Class 2-A Midwest Regional at 132 pounds. He recorded two pins and a technical fall before defeating East Surry’s Michael Fischer 6-2 in the final. Dennis, a senior, holds a 49-1 record this season. Last February, he placed fifth in the state at 126. He received All-Piedmont Athletic Conference recognition the past two years.

Southwestern Randolph, girls’ basketball‌ George has been a productive contributor throughout the season for the Cougars, who are one of the area’s top teams in girls’ basketball. She’s a versatile sophomore. The Cougars won two games last week by defeating Eastern Randolph, with George scoring a team-high 15 points, and Wheatmore. That pushed the team’s record to 14-2. Last month, George was named Most Valuable Player of the SportsTone.net Invitational at Asheboro when the Cougars won three games on the way to the holiday tournament championship.
