HIGH POINT — High Point was quick to fill a vacancy for men’s basketball coach by promoting Flynn Clayman to the position last week. Clayman moves up from associate head coach as the Panthers aim for continuing after making the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in Division I last month. Clayman replaces Alan Huss, who stepped down last week to take a staff position at Creighton, where he’s expected to be the coach-in-waiting. Asheboro’s Diamond McDowell receives All-American honor

From Asheboro to All-American Diamond McDowell of Asheboro was named a Division II All-American for women’s basketball. The senior forward for Anderson University in South Carolina was recognized by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. She was placed on the third team. McDowell averaged 18.6 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. McDowell was named the Most Valuable Player of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament after leading the Trojans to the championship last month. She had 22 points and 14 rebounds in the championship game when Anderson defeated Coker 64-58. McDowell was the leader in Division II defensive rebounding with 9.6…

ASHEBORO – Jerquarius Stanback of Asheboro won’t play in next week’s North Carolina East-West All-Star Game because of an injury stemming from late in the basketball season. Stanback, an Appalachian State signee, is dealing with a wrist injury that might require surgery, Asheboro coach Brian Nance said. “He fell in that playoff game and just landed on it,” Nance said. “There’s something in the wrist.” Stanback was injured in a violent tumble during a first-round game of the Class 3A state playoffs vs. visiting Carson. Freshman Summer Bowman was part of one of the best seasons in Appalachian State women’s soccer history. Bowman, a former Wheatmore player, compiled four goals and three assists. She was second on the team in goals and her 11 points ranked third on the team. Bowman, a forward, appeared in 15 games, starting nine of those. The Mountaineers placed third in the Sun Belt regular season for its best winning percentage in conference play with a 6-2-2 mark.
