Uwharrie Charter Academy closed within a half-game of Southwestern Randolph by week’s end. The teams will meet April 25 at Southwestern Randolph to end the regular season. The Eagles socked Southern Alamance 12-1, trounced Jordan-Matthews 15-5 and topped Montgomery Central 9-0. Wheatmore, baseball ‌Kines, a junior left-hander, has been a key pitcher for the Warriors, who won three of their first five games. The Warriors opened Piedmont Athletic Conference play last week by defeating rival Trinity twice. Kines was the starting pitcher for the league opener. During the previous week, Kines struck out 10 Asheboro batters in four innings of Wheatmore’s season-opening victory. Kines is fresh off the basketball season when he led the Warriors in scoring.

And the Blue Comets won’t have to leave home this week because the pre-determined site for semifinals and finals is Asheboro’s gym. Asheboro (20-3) had one of two byes to the semifinals. Prep Boys: Randleman Tigers stay on right track

RANDLEMAN – Randleman doesn’t have a game on this week’s boys’ basketball schedule. When the Tigers return to play, there’s a showdown looming. On Jan. 23, there’s a clash at Trinity that looms large on the Piedmont Athletic Conference landscape. Last week, Randleman toppled visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 67-44 with Greg Price’s 22 points and Tyshaun Goldston’s 20 points leading the way. Two nights later, the Tigers won 59-48 at home with Goldston supplying 18 points and Price with 12 points. Those results pushed Randleman’s record to 12-5 overall, 5-0 in PAC play.
