ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Camryn Vickery

Randleman, volleyball Vickery had big production as the Tigers put together a six-match winning streak through the end of last week. They had three-set sweeps in their first four matches in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Vickery, a senior setter, averaged 34.5 assists in encounters with Southwestern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy. She also averaged five digs in those matches. She added to her impact with 7.7 percent of her serves resulting in aces in the UCA match. Randleman is aiming for its seventh consecutive winning season. Uwharrie Charter Academy, volleyball Faglier has been a force on the front line for the Eagles as they’ve collected victories on a regular basis. Faglier, a senior, is a hitter and middle blocker and she often provides the finishing touches on UCA points. She has regularly led the team in kills during the first few weeks of the season. Randolph County teams had encouraging moments among their results in the first week of competition for the new school year.     Boys’ soccer   ** Asheboro went to Wilmington and split a pair of games. Prep Notes: New quests await top teams such as Southwestern Randolph volleyball, Asheboro soccer

Southwestern Randolph’s powerhouse volleyball team will try to keep it going for another season. The Cougars, who’ve had 25 or more victories the past three seasons, begin their schedule Aug. 14 at home against Oak Grove, which had a 22-5 record last year. Southwestern Randolph, under coach Darby Kennedy, went 25-5 in 2023. The Cougars are a combined 79-14 in a three-year span. That stretch began with the 2021 state championship in Class 2A. Uwharrie Charter Academy, volleyball / softball Kenzie Hill made a big impact for Uwharrie Charter Academy in a couple of sports. She played for the highly successful volleyball and softball teams. She was an All-Piedmont Athletic Conference softball player as a sophomore and a senior. This year, she led the Eagles in batting with a .459 average and also turned in team highs with 34 runs batted in and 33 stolen bases. She provided two home runs and 10 triples. Eastern Randolph, volleyball/softball Beaver played multiple sports with the Wildcats and was a key contributor along the way. She was an All-Piedmont Athletic Conference selection for volleyball and softball as a senior. In volleyball, Beaver led the team in aces and was in the top two among the Wildcats in hitting percentage and kills per set. She was a key offensive contributor in softball.
