Providence Grove girls hold spot top ahead of Trinity in PAC tennis

The girls' tennis teams from Providence Grove and Trinity both finished 9-1 in regular-season Piedmont Athletic Conference play to tie for first place. Last week, Providence Grove defeated Trinity in a special tiebreaker match to determine the top seed from the conference for the dual team state playoffs. The PAC Tournament is set for Tuesday at Asheboro Memorial Park. Providence Grove and Trinity were the only teams with winning records in league play.

PAC football openers go smooth for unbeaten Wildcats, Tigers

Providence Gove snaps a four-game losing streak by winning at Trinity Eastern Randolph and Randleman football teams had no problems at the launch of Piedmont Athletic Conference play. The undefeated squads rolled in their respective league openers Friday night. Eastern Randolph 49, Southwestern Randolph 0: At Asheboro, Cade McCallum threw for five touchdowns for the visiting Wildcats (6-0 overall). The Wildcats (3-0) notched their second road shutout of the season. Southern Lee fell to 1-1. Eastern Randolph blocked a Southern Lee field-goal attempt before scoring the first points of the game. CLIMAX – Anything awkward about an August coaching change for Providence Grove’s football team isn’t a primary concern for interim coach Mark Heilig. There’s a fast-approaching season to prepare for. “My head has been spinning a little bit,” Heilig said. “(The amount) of time has been the big thing. Providence Grove, baseball Beasley made an impact in multiple sports at Providence Grove. As a senior for the Patriots during the baseball season, he landed a spot on the All-Piedmont Athletic Conference team. The captain was a pitcher and infielder for the Patriots. He led the team with a .365 batting average and he racked up a team-high five pitching victories during Providence Grove’s 10-14 season. Beasley also played basketball and football for the Patriots. Providence Grove, girls’ soccer, tennis Swaim participated in three sports for the Patriots and made big impacts. As a senior, she was part of the conference’s third-place doubles tandem. Swaim played key roles for Providence Grove’s girls’ soccer team during the spring.
