Grant awarded for snacks at Ramseur Elementary School

RAMSEUR – Ramseur Elementary School has been awarded a USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant for this school year. Beginning this week, a fresh fruit or vegetable snack will be provided to all students at the school at no cost. Snacks will be available in the classroom during designated snack time. Students won’t be required to eat the snacks, but will be encouraged to try the fruits and vegetables.

ASHEBORO – Five finalists have been named for Teacher of the Year in the Randolph County School System. They are Elizabeth Tillery of Trinity High School, Harmonee Klein of Hopewell Elementary School, Lauren Wood of Randolph Early College, Sarah Davis of Randleman High School and William Villano of Uwharrie Ridge Six-Twelve. The winner will be unveiled Sept. 3 during the annual banquet at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro.

Two Eastern Randolph students die in car wreck

RAMSEUR – The Eastern Randolph High School community is in mourning after the death of two students in an automobile accident Thursday night. Mario Lara, 15, died at the scene. Tyler Franklin, who was the driver of the Infiniti, died Friday after he was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Two other students were hospitalized following the single-vehicle accident. Franklin, 17, was the son of Kevin Franklin, who’s president of the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation. The accident occurred at about 6:25 p.m. at the intersection of Parks Crossroads Church Road and Kildee Church Road in Ramseur.…

Randolph Early College recognized again on national level

ASHEBORO – The Randolph County Schools Board of Education recognized students from Randolph Early College, which was the top awarded school in the nation at the 2024 Beta National Convention. More than 360 high schools from around the country were represented at the convention. In total, Randolph Early College earned 32 total awards with five first-place finishes in the competition. ASHEBORO – The Back-to-School Prayer Night in Randolph County is set for 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Sessions will be held at Asheboro City School and Randolph County School System locations at about 40 sites. The sessions usually last no more than a half-hour. The program is sponsored by Randolph Christian Men, a group that took over organization of the event in 2014. ASHEBORO – The Randolph County School System's board of education met last Thursday for a wrap-up at the end of the school year and the acceptance of several grants related to child nutrition. The first was The Dairy Alliance Youth Wellness Program Grant from The Dairy Alliance for cafeteria equipment. The grant provides a refrigerated milk merchandiser for Providence Grove High School and a refrigerated milk dispenser for Uwharrie Ridge Six-Twelve in order to “maximize student access and consumption of cold milk.” The total value of the equipment provided by the grant is just under $8,000 The second grant, at…

ASHEBORO – Drinking water should be off limits at Farmer Elementary School because of chemicals found in the water supply, Randolph County School System superintendent Stephen Gainey announced last week. Staff members are advised to avoid drinking the water after a report released by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. There are no classes because of summer break and only about a half-dozen staff members are working at the school for the next several weeks. SILER CITY – Kaley Elliott, a graduate of Southwestern Randolph High School, is the recipient of a Mountaire Farms scholarship. Children and grandchildren of employees, growers, and grain producers were eligible for the scholarship, which provides $2,500 to help with college. There were 32 winners – 16 in North Carolina and 16 in the Delaware / Maryland area. Elliott, from Denton, plans to attend High Point University to study tourism and event management, according to a release from Mountaire Farms.
