Uwharrie Charter Academy, baseball  Medinger has been a steady performer for the Eagles, and he’s one of the core veterans on the team.  UCA went 3-0 last week, including winning a pair of tight Piedmont Athletic Conference matchups with Eastern Randolph. Medinger scored a run in the team’s 3-0 decision against Eastern Randolph.  Medinger, a senior utility player, is among the top UCA players in on-base percentage and run production.  He was one of two UCA selections for the All-PAC team in 2022.  Entering this week with an 8-9 record, the Eagles are within two victories of matching last year’s…

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Natalie Flores

Asheboro, girls’ soccer Flores has been a big part of Asheboro’s offense, and that has helped the Blue Comets in their first two Mid-Piedmont Conference games. A senior forward and striker, Flores has provided five goals and a team-leading five assists. She has regularly been one of Asheboro’s top threats. This continues a trend because she was second on the team in both goals and assists last year. Asheboro pulled out a pair of victories in Mid-Piedmont Conference play last week. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tyler Kimball

Wheatmore, baseball Kimball has been a boost at the plate for the Warriors in their quest for a turnaround season. Wheatmore won three of four games in a seven-day span. That included two victories against Eastern Randolph in Piedmont Athletic Conference play and a non-league triumph at West Davidson. Earlier this month, Kimball, a senior, had a hit in each game against Randleman. He homered in one of those two games. The Warriors, who haven’t had a winning season since 2018, entered this week with a 5-5 overall record.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Payton Purdue

Eastern Randolph, girls’ basketball Eastern Randolph had a breakthrough season in girls’ basketball, and Purdue, a senior, played a significant role. The team secured its first winning season in six years. Purdue was one of three seniors on the Eastern Randolph roster. She was the starting center.  The Wildcats reached the third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs. They finished with a 19-8 record.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jordan Booker

Randleman, girls’ basketball  Booker is a senior starter on another Piedmont Athletic Conference championship team for the Tigers. Booker, a guard, ranks third in scoring on the team with 8.4 points per game, hitting about 51 percent of her shots from the field. She’s second in rebounding at 5.0 per game. She’s also in the top three for Randleman in steals and free-throw percentage. The Tigers, who’ve eclipsed the 20-win mark for the second season in a row, finish the regular season this week.
