UCA, Trinity hold top seeds for dual team wrestling state playoffs

Defending Class 1-A state champion Uwharrie Charter Academy and undefeated Trinity both received top seeds in their respective regions for the wrestling dual team state playoffs, which begin Saturday with two rounds.

UCA (30-1) is home against No. 16 seed North Rowan (1-17) to open East Region competition. Eighth-seeded Northeast Carolina Prep (23-4) and ninth-seeded Eastern Randolph (19-9) also will meet at UCA. The winners clash in the second round.

In the Class 2-A West Region, Trinity (33-0) will welcome No. 16 seed Reidsville (2-3) for a first-round matchup, with Shelby Burns (17-7) and Lincoln Charter (19-19) meeting in the other first-round tilt.

Wheatmore (12-12) also made the Class 2-A field as the No. 15 seed in the West Region, meaning a visit to second-seeded West Lincoln (20-4). North Wilkes (15-6) and West Davidson (6-8) also will be there.

The third and fourth rounds will be held Wednesday to determine the state finalists.

The title matches are set for Feb. 3 in the fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Class 2-A and Class 4-A finals begin at noon, with the Class 1-A and Class 3-A finals at 3 p.m.
