Asheboro’s Davidson places 13th in N.C. Amateur

DURHAM – Sam Davidson of Asheboro tied for 13th place in the North Carolina Amateur, which wrapped up Sunday at Croasdaile Country Club. Davidson, who tied for the runner-up spot in the tournament last year, finished at 2-under par 282 after rounds of 71, 72, 69 and 70 across four days. The champion was Oak Island’s Walker Isley, who won by a tournament-record 15 shots. Isley, a UNC Wilmington golfer, finished at 25-under 259 following rounds of 70, 63, 64 and 62. Charges upgraded on youth in Asheboro shooting case

ASHEBORO – There are upgraded charges against the youth who has been arrested regarding the death of Southwestern Randolph High School student Pedro Ortiz-Perez. The unnamed suspect, whose name isn’t being released because of his age (16), faces upgraded charges of first-degree murder. That came after a grand jury session earlier this month. The suspect remains in a juvenile detention facility in Rowan County. Ortiz-Perez died May 14 from gunshot wounds stemming from a shooting nearly two weeks earlier near North Asheboro Park. Area crime briefs: Teen faces charges after gunshots in Asheboro

ASHEBORO – A teenager faces charges after gunshots were fired in the city late last month. Asheboro Police charged Kelvin Amad Cook, 18, with six counts of discharging a firearm inside city limits, two counts of injury to personal property, going armed to the terror of the public and resisting a public officer. He received a $25,000 secured bond. The alleged incident took place at approximately 7:50 p.m. May 24 in the area of South Church Street, West Wainman Avenue and Independence Drive. Southwestern Randolph, softball Crutchfield completed her junior season as the Most Valuable Player of the Class 2A state championship series. She pitched every inning in both games as the Cougars captured the title by sweeping Midway in games held at UNC Greensboro. In those 12 innings (because Game 1 was reduced to five innings by the mercy rule), she compiled 19 strikeouts and issued three walks. LIBERTY – Hours for the Liberty Public Library are changing as of this week. The adjustments come for Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the library opening at 11 a.m. rather than 9 a.m. In making the announcement on the time shifts, the library pointed out that mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays were generally the slowest periods in the building. SOPHIA – The next regular racing night at the track comes Saturday with the Grand National Super Series holding two 50-lap races. There also will be competition in regular divisions such as Challengers, 602 Mods, UCARs, Bootleggers and Mod 4s. Brody Duggins edged Dalton Ledbetter to win the Challengers feature in the David Saunders Memorial competition May 11 at Caraway Speedway.
